Bellator 174 Free Betting Picks and Tips for March 3, 2017

Earl brings us a double dose of MMA picks this week as he first looks at the Bellator 174 event taking place on Friday night.

Bellator is back on American soil this week with Bellator 174 Friday Night from WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. There are 10 fights currently slated for this card but as usual, there will only be odds for about half of that.

Marloes Coenen (23-7) vs. Julia Budd (9-2)

The featherweight women’s division takes the limelight Friday night in the Main Event as Marloes Coenen takes on Julia Budd. Coenen is 23-7 overall and 2-1 under the Bellator banner. She is a durable, well rounded fighter that has fought in all of the major promotions including Strikeforce, Bellator, Invicta, Dream and Shooto. In her last fight, she was a HUGE favorite at -600 and was submitted in the 1st round by Alexis Dufresne. Her three losses prior to that were a pair to Cyborg Justino and Miesha Tate. Coenen has credible wins over UFC bantamweights Liz Carmouche and Sarah Kaufman. She is a legitimate threat at featherweight with 17 wins by submission. If you go to the ground with her, you better be able to protect your neck and limbs or she will submit you!

Coenen will be taking on 11 fight pro Julia Budd. Budd is coming into this fight off a majority decision victory over Arlene Blencowe at Bellator 162. Budd is on a 7 fight win streak. She is a veteran of the sport like Coenen, who has fought for Bellator, Strikeforce and Invicta. Her only 2 losses on her resume come from current UFC Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes and former UFC Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey. She also has a credible win over current UFC Featherweight Champion Germaine De Randamie.

This is an elite fight for the Bellator Women’s Featherweight Crown. Both of these ladies are tough as nails The one thing that I see that separates these two is Coenen’s level of experience and level of quality opponents. She has gone 7 rounds with “Cyborg” and has fought numerous elite top level opponents, who are currently in the UFC. I think this fight will end up with Coenen winning by submission.

  • Final Pick: Marloes Coenen +116 for 2 Units (AT BETDSI)

Fernando González (25-14) vs. Brandon Girtz (14-5)

Fernando Gonzalez lost his last fight against welterweight standout Michael Paige by split decision. That fight was, in my opinion, one of the most boring fights I have ever watched in my life and made me want to scratch my eyes out at the end of the day. There was little to no action in the fight and the real loser of this fight was the people watching the fight! On the actual scorecards, 1 judge scored all three rounds for Gonzalez but the other 2 scored the fight for Paige.

Brandon Girtz is coming into this fight off a tough 3 round unanimous decision loss to Adam Piccolotti. Girtz went into that fight off a 1 year absence from the cage and still looked good with all things considered. He started out slow, as expected and turned it on late winning the 3rd round of that fight. He has spent the majority of his career fighting at lightweight but this fight will be in the welterweight division.

Neither of these guys is going to set the world of MMA on fire. They both have a very dry structure and usually provide very boring fights. That being said, this fight has distance written all over it! Gonzalez has gone over the 2.5 round mark in 5 of his last 6 fights. Girtz has gone over the 2.5 round mark in 2 of his last 3 fights.

  • Final Pick: Gonzalez vs. Girtz OVER 2.5 Rds -240 for 2 Units (AT BETDSI)
