The weekend is past and most brackets are broken and now, we turn our attention to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA. The first matchup we are taking a look at is the Thursday matchup between the 11 seed Xavier Musketeers and the 2 seed Arizona Wildcats.
This will be the second time in three years that the Musketeers played the Wildcats in the big dance. In 2015, the Wildcats beat Xavier by the score of 68-60.
Xavier Content Playing Spoiler
Xavier reached the Sweet 16 by upsetting and totally dominating 3 seed Florida State by the score of 91-66. This was the second upset that the Musketeers pulled off, upsetting the Maryland Terrapins 2 days prior. The Musketeers beat both Maryland and Florida State by playing a tough 2-3 zone defense that forced both teams to take shots from outside of their comfort zone.
With the Saturday win, the Musketeers are now 23-13 SU and 17-18 ATS. They have won 5 out of their last 6 SU and all 6 games ATS!
Wildcats Coach Miller Ready To Play Former Team
Arizona advanced to the Sweet 16, for the 4th time in the past 5 years, by winning a hard fought battle against St. Mary’s by the score of 69-60. The Wildcats were trailing at halftime in this game by 1 point and came back in the second half to win by 9. Arizona started out slow and struggled shooting in the first half only hitting 34% but did a complete turnaround in the second half shooting 59% in the second half.
Arizona played a slow pace in the 1st half but pushed the pace in the second half, to a nice steady pace that proved effective against St. Mary’s 2nd ranked defense. Freshman Lauri Markkanen put up a double-double, scoring 16 points, while pulling down 11 rebounds.
Arizona head coach Sean Miller will now focus on playing against his former team, the Xavier Musketeers. The Wildcats are now 32-4 SU and 19-14-3 ATS. The Wildcats have won 9 out of their last 10 games SU and are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games.
Disciplined Wildcats Advance To Elite 8
This game will come down to if the Musketeers can force the Wildcats into taking shots that they don’t want to take. They are relying heavily on their 2-3 zone defense in the tournament but against a disciplined Arizona Wildcats team, I don’t see that happening! I like the Arizona Wildcats to win and advance to the Elite 8. I also like them to cover the spread of -7, as I think they win this game by double digits.
- Pick: Arizona Wildcats -7 for 2 Units
