Cardinals Relying On Longball In 2018

The St. Louis Cardinals are coming in off a scare on Sunday, where they led the game 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th inning, before allowing 1 run in the 8th and 1 run in the 9th.  The Cardinals put runners on 1st and 2nd base with one out before closing out the game and securing the win. They are now 9-7 and are in second place in the National League Central Division.  The Cardinals have hit more home runs than any other team in the National League. They have hit 23 of the long balls and are led by Yadier Molina, who has hit 5 home runs and is second on the team with 11 RBI’s.

Adam Wainwright will get the nod for the Cardinals.  Wainwright is 0-2 on the year with a 5.06 ERA. He has started 2 games and only lasted 10.2 innings.  In those 10.2 innings, he has given up 6 earned runs on 12 hits. Wainwright has struck out 7 and walked 4 in the 2018 season.  Wainwright simply has not looked good this year. He only lasted 3 innings in his first start and in his second start, he was teed off on at the tone of 8 hits and 3 earned runs over 7 innings.

Cubs Not Getting Help From Pitching Staff

The Chicago Cubs are coming in off having their game on Sunday rained out.  They were slated to take on the Atlanta Braves in the rubber match, with each team winning one game, but it was rained out.  They are currently sitting in 4th place in the NL Central Division but are just 3 games behind the first place Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Cubs have not gotten the effectiveness from their pitching staff this year that they have in the past. Their have a team ERA of 3.89 and have allowed 33 runs in their last 5 games!

Tyler Chatwood will make the start for the Cubbies on Monday.  Chatwood will be looking for his first start of the season and find a way to limit hits in the game.  Chatwood is 0-2 on the season with a 4.91 ERA. Chatwood has pitched in 11 innings and given up 6 earned runs on 13 innings.  Chatwood has never really been an overpowering pitcher and this year, he has struggled with his control striking out 11 and walking 7.

Cubs and Cardinals Play High Scoring Game

The Cubs and Cardinals bats both have ideal matchups with Wainwright and Chatwood on the mound.  I expect both of these teams to get hot bats in this game and post some runs on the board. With both teams posting a decent amount of runs, the play here is the OVER.

Pick: Chicago vs. St. Louis Over 8.5 for 3 units
