Duke Blue Devils
The Duke Blue Devils have not had the easiest time getting to the Elite 8 but they have found ways to win and advance. The Blue Devils opened up the NCAA Tournament with a win over North Dakota State by the score of 85-62.
They dominated that game but both games in the 2nd round and the Sweet 16 were much closer and came down to the final buzzer. In the second round, the Blue Devils needed to hold off the UCF Knights, to get the win 77-76.
In Friday Night’s Sweet 16 matchup against Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils needed to come from behind to get the win 75-73.
In both of those games, the Blue Devils were led by Freshman sensation Zion Williamson. Williamson scored 32 points against UCF and 23 against Virginia Tech, to lead the team in scoring.
Michigan State Spartans
The Michigan State Spartans have probably had one of the toughest paths to get to the Elite 8. They started off the NCAA Tournament by competing against a very tough Bradley team and got an easy win, beating them by 10 points, 76-65.
They followed that win up by facing their Big Ten Conference foes Minnesota Golden Gophers. They knocked off the Golden Gophers in the second round, beating them by 20 points 70-50.
On Friday Night, the Spartans were expected to have their toughest game against LSU Tigers but they once again showed that they are stable and experienced and ended up knocking of LSU by the score 80-63.
Michigan State is a very well rounded team. They can play great offense and also play very stingy defense. They are ranked 46th in the country on offense, scoring 78.5 points per game, while also ranked 35th in the country on defense, allowing just 65 points per game.
Spartans Experience Is The Difference, Get Win Over Duke
We have seen that Duke’s freshman have found ways to win games but it has been much closer than Coach K would like. The Blue Devils have struggled when teams play tough defense against them and the youth has sort of struggled with more experienced teams. Yes, they have won, but it was close.
Against a team like Michigan State, we are talking about a whole different means of defense. How will they deal with Coach Izzo’s adjustments and how will they stand against the size of the Spartans. I can see the Spartans coming out fast, sort of like they did against LSU and making the Blue Devils feel like the little step-brother. Michigan State wins here!
