#3 Purdue Boilermakers
The Purdue Boilermakers knocked off former #1 team in the nation, Tennessee Volunteers, on Thursday Night, in overtime 99-94. The Boilermakers pretty much led the game from start to midway through the 2nd half before allowing Tennessee back in the game and eventually sending the game to overtime.
Purdue have now defeated Old Dominion in the first round by the score of 61-48, Villanova in the second round 87-61 and Tennessee in the Sweet 16 by the score 99-94.
Carsen Edwards led the team in the regular season and has also led the team in each of their wins in the NCAA Tournament. Edwards averaged 23.8 PPG in the regular season but has increased that number into the tournament.
Edwards scored 29 points against Tennessee, 42 against Villanova and 26 against Old Dominion. Edwards is dominating the opposition along with the sharp shooting of 3-point threat Ryan Cline.
#1 Virginia Cavaliers
The Virginia Cavaliers have finally started to play like they were expected to as the #1 seed. They are using their #1 ranked defense in the country to shut down opposing offenses and get those wins.
The Cavaliers are coming into this game fresh off a Thursday Night Sweet 16 victory over the red hot Oregon Ducks. This is the 2nd time in 4 years that Virginia has gotten past the Sweet 16 and into the Elite 8. Now, they will be shooting for the Final Four on Saturday Night!
The Cavaliers defense has started to shine and on Thursday Night, held their 11th opponent this year under 50 points. When this defense is playing at their best, they are truly tough to score on and will cause all sorts of headaches for the Purdue Boilermakers.
Cavaliers Dominate On Defense
As i said earlier, when this Virginia Cavaliers defense is playing their game, I strongly believe that they are one of the best teams in the country and I truly believe they can beat any team in front of them.
Purdue is really playing over their heads. They probably shouldn’t have won the Tennessee game and truth be told, they shouldn’t be this far into the tournament. That said, Virginia ends their run here and wins by double-digits!
