Team Recaps

Coastal Carolina

Coastal’s profile so far is a little “anything can happen.” They’re scoring 75.1 PPG but allowing 71.5 PPG, with a 41.1% team FG mark. That combination often creates games that look like they should be higher-scoring… until Coastal hits one of its cold stretches.

Their recent results show the swing:

  • Lost at Grand Canyon 82–61 (most recent)
  • Won at Winthrop 88–84
  • Lost at USC Upstate 85–78 (OT)

The good news if you like Coastal: they have multiple perimeter options that can keep them in it. Joshua Beadle leads them at 15.0 PPG and also tops the team in assists (3.1 APG) and steals (1.1 SPG). AJ Dancler (14.5 PPG) and Rasheed Jones (13.9 PPG) give Coastal real secondary scoring.

The concern: if the threes aren’t dropping, Coastal can get stuck taking tough shots late in the clock, and that’s where playing on the road against a defense-first App team gets uncomfortable.

App State

App State enters 7-5 and has won three straight. They score 74.8 PPG and allow just 67.0 PPG, which is the cleanest “betting” stat in the whole preview because it points directly to totals and margin outcomes.

The Mountaineers’ last five are a nice snapshot of their identity:

  • Beat High Point 86–78 (OT)
  • Won at ECU 67–54
  • Smoked VUL 133–45

(That 133-point outburst is… a lot. I treat extreme blowouts cautiously for betting because they can distort averages, but it still suggests App can score when it gets clean looks.)

Individually, Kasen Jennings is the headliner at 15.5 PPG and is also a disruptive defender (1.1 SPG). App also has interior stability through Luke Wilson (team-best 6.1 RPG, 1.8 BPG). And they have a real table-setter in Alonzo Dodd at 3.4 APG.

One stat that jumps off App’s team sheet: they’re holding opponents to 38.5% FG while shooting 45.8% FG themselves. That’s a classic “good bet” backbone—forcing misses, avoiding droughts, and letting defense create easier offense.

Matchup keys

1) Shot quality vs. shot-making

Coastal can absolutely score, but App is built to make you work. If you’re considering a Coastal ticket, you’re basically betting that Beadle, Dancler, and Jones hit enough perimeter shots early to keep App from setting its defense and controlling tempo.

2) Rim protection + rebounds = fewer freebies

App’s edge in blocks and defensive numbers (Wilson especially) is one of those things that doesn’t always show up in a pregame spread… until Coastal misses a couple bunnies and suddenly the game feels like it’s being played uphill.

3) The number is sitting in a “decision zone”

With App -4.5 and a 135.5 total on the board, you’re not being asked to lay a huge number, but you are being asked to trust App to separate. That tends to come down to late-game execution: free throws, empty possessions, and whether Coastal can create turnovers to steal extra shots.

Here are the most useful trend nuggets for this matchup:

  • App State is 6-3 ATS in its last 9 games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of App State’s last 6 games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of App State’s last 5 home games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of the last 10 meetings vs Coastal Carolina.
  • App State is 5-0 straight up in its last 5 home games vs Coastal Carolina.

The pick: Under 135.5 (best bet), lean App State -4.5

I’m playing this as a game environment bet more than a “who’s better?” take.

App’s defense is the most consistent unit on the floor here: 67.0 PPG allowed is strong, and their opponent FG% allowed (38.5%) supports it. Meanwhile, Coastal’s offense has shown it can get dragged into inefficient stretches against solid teams (the 82–61 loss at GCU is a recent example of a game where the scoring never really got comfortable).

On top of that, the trend stack is pretty loud: multiple recent App “UNDER” angles plus an “UNDER” history in the series. When I can line up team profile + recent results + trends without doing mental gymnastics, I’d rather take the simpler path.

My prediction

  • Best Bet: Under 135.5
  • Side Lean: App State -4.5
  • Projected final: App State 70, Coastal Carolina 62 (Total: 132)
