Auburn Tigers Preview
The Tigers started out as a top 10 team with hopes of making the college football playoffs. They ended up in the “others receiving votes” outside the top 25. I have read where the season was a disaster, but 3 of the 5 losses were to LSU, Georgia & Alabama.
What was a disaster was the offense that was supposed to be unstoppable behind QB Jarrett Stidham. Take away the points they scored vs Purdue, Liberty & Alabama St, they only averaged 22 points per game.
Last season was the first time in 10 years they did not have a 1,000 yard rusher. After a 4-1 start, they went 3-4 the rest of the regular season and that is shocking and unacceptable for Auburn football. Tiger boosters were trying to have coach Malzahn fired, but he survived. If 2019 is like 2018, he won’t.
The Tigers have (6) starters returning on offense this season. The biggest loss is QB Jarrett Stidham who left early to give the NFL a shot. Finding a replacement is not going to be easy.
His backup of two years Malik Willis, has only thrown 14 passes and has not looked good. Redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood is the other option. If those guys fail, they do have freshman, 5* recruit Bo Nix (love that name) who is considered the future.
The offensive line should improve with 5 seniors, should help break in the new QB and get the running game going again. There are capable RB’s & WR’s ready to step in. In fact they say WR Anthony Schwartz might be the fastest player in college football.
They need to get the ball in his hands and turn him loose. Auburn usually comes up with quality running backs, so that is not a concern. After last season underwhelming performance, 2019 can only be an improvement.
Auburn has (7) starters returning from a defense that was ranked 4th in the SEC and 14th nationally in scoring last season. The defense sort of went unnoticed with all the attention given to the offense last season.
This season it will be the defense that is expected to carry the offense. The secondary should be fantastic with 4 starters returning. The D-line has 3 starters back and plenty of depth. They have the players and talent to rotate and stay fresh.
This could be a dominating defensive line. All three linebackers need to be replaced, but with the d-line and secondary looking so good, it will allow those guys in the middle adjust. SEC offenses better come ready to play against this group.
AUBURN SPECIAL TEAMS
Hopefully Auburn is not going to rely on their kicking game too much in 2019. Unless something changes, it is nothing special. Anders Carlson only made 15 of 25 attempts last season. I am not sure what the thought process was, but he was 2 of 9 from 50+ yards, did they not trust their punter or thought their kicker was better than that?
2019 AUBURN TIGERS OUTLOOK
This season can only get better, right? Auburn needs to get back to run first, pass second. I hate to call an opener a must win, but the Oregon game is huge. A win sets the tone and frame of mind for a winning season.
A bad loss and “here we go again” comes to mind. Winning starts with the offensive & defensive lines. Auburn is in good shape in both cases. With only 4 true road games, this team has a chance at success. If they were in any other conference other than the SEC they would be conference champs.
This is a very pivotal season for the program and the head coach. Although I feel this team will be better, I see another 8 win season. If things break right for them they may reach 9.
BETONLINE has listed the regular season wins at 8. I like their chances of getting past this number and reaching 9.
