The Boston College Eagles have gone to a bowl game in four of the last five years but have not finished with a better record than 1 game over .500 dating back to 2009, when they went 8-5. This team always seems like they are on the brink of a breakout year but then reality sets in and they fall back down to hover right around .500. If there was ever a year that stuck out for the opportunity, the year is in front of the Eagles, as they have a plethora of returning starters with plenty of experience. Some teams have a few starters returning on one side of the ball but for Boston College, they have guys returning in key spots, on both sides of the ball.
Boston College Eagle Coaching
Steve Addazio is the Head Coach at Boston College and is back with the team for his sixth year in Chestnut Hill. Addazio has been with Boston College since 2013 and has a 31-33 record with the Eagles. Addazio has coached and both Boston College and Temple, where he has a combined career record of 44-44 record and has gone 2-3 in bowls.
Prior to his Head Coaching career, Addazio spent many years coaching on the offensive side of the ball. Addazio spent several years with the Florida Gators as their Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinators. He has also coached with Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Indiana.
Scot Loeffler is back for another year with the Boston College Eagles as their Offensive Coordinator. Loeffler has been with the team since 2016 and prior to coming to Boston College, he was the Offensive Coordinator at Temple, Auburn and Virginia Tech. Prior to being an Offensive Coordinator, Loeffler spent more than a decade coaching Quarterbacks at Central Michigan, Michigan, Florida and in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.
Jim Reid is here for his third year with the Boston College Eagles as their Defensive Coordinator. Reid came to BC in 2016 after spending more than 40 years coaching at some fashion in the NFL and the NCAA. Reid is a defensive oriented coach that is known for his very strong Linebacking units.
Boston College Eagle Offense
Last year we saw Boston College Quarterback Anthony Brown go down with an injury in their game against North Carolina State. Brown will be returning at some point but has not hit the field yet in BC. Brown was ahead of schedule back at the Spring game and Coach Addazio has stated that he thinks that Brown will be ready for the Eagles opening game against UMass.
Brown is a dual threat Quarterback that relies on his speed to be successful. If Brown is unable to go, for any reason, the Eagles have some depth at the QB position, including EJ Perry. Perry is a true sophomore, that took the lead in the Spring game and looked decent. Perry has the talent to lead this team and if Brown doesn’t perform when he comes back from injury, he could be on a short leash with Perry waiting in the wings.
Brown and/or Perry may not have to do much this season because they have a talented sophomore Running Back in AJ Dillon that we feel is one of the best in the ACC. If you read our 2018 ACC Conference Preview, you know that we are high on AJ Dillon and feel he could be a star in the future. Addazio has had some really strong running games throughout his coaching career and this one may take the cake! Between the talent in the backfield and the push they will get upfront, this could be his best backfield in his career and a Head Coach at Boston College.
Dillon will run behind one of the best Offensive Lines in the ACC this year. The Eagles have experience and are very big up front on the Offensive Line for 2018.
The Eagles haven’t really been known as a pass-oriented team but if Brown returns healthy, that could change. They have a very talented crew of receivers that can make this team very difficult to defend. Senior Jeff Smith, Tommy Sweeney and Kobay White will form one of the most talented trio of receivers in the ACC and will take some pressure off Dillon as teams won’t be able to stack the box to defend the run, or they will get burned by the play action pass.
Boston College Eagles Defense
The Boston College defense will once again be very good in 2018. Last year, the defense was plagued by injury but they really didn’t show much of a deficit on the field. It was next man up in BC and that will be the case once again here this season.
Zach Allen will be the anchor of this defense and he will have many NFL recruiting eyes on him throughout the year. Allen is a pro-style Defensive End that posted 100 tackles and 6 sacks in 2017. He is back to improve on those numbers and boost his ranking in the NFL Draft.
The linebacking corp is going to be special this year in Boston College! Connor Strachan will be back with the team after missing his entire 2017 season. He led the team in 2016 in tackles and now gets a second chance at making a name for himself as his collegiate career is coming to an end.
2018 Boston College Schedule
Boston College has a unique schedule this year. They will play a easy first half of the season and a tough ending of the season. They will kick off the year against UMass and Holy Cross, which will have them 2-0 to start out the season.
They will then have to go on the road where they will face Wake Forest and Purdue in back to back weeks, separated by 9 days. They will have their bye week on October 20 and then follow it up with four games against the Miami Hurricanes, Virginia Tech Hokies, Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles.
- September 1 UMass Minutemen
- September 8 Holy Cross Crusaders
- September 13 @ Wake Forest Demon Deacons

2018 Predictions and Betting Outlook for Boston College
I think this will end up being the best team Addazio has ever had at Boston College. That being said, it is really hard to think of a way that this team gets past 7, possibly 8 wins on the year. That stretch of games at the end of October through the middle of November is just too hard to look past and tough on any team.
When you are looking ahead at some games to play Boston College, make sure you check out their opening game, where they will face UMass. Boston College has played UMass 25 times and have posted an SU record of 20-5. A game that you want to also look out for is the October 26 game against the Miami Hurricanes. In the series between BC and Miami, they have faced each other 29 times but BC has only came out on the winning side of those games 5 times! Fade the Eagles when they play Miami!
If you are a gambler that likes to play the underdog over the long haul, then Boston College may be an ideal team for you. You can get really good odds on them at MyBookie to win the ACC Championship for +4000 and to win the National Championship for +40000. I am going to be a fan of the Eagles this year and will be betting on them several times because I think they will keep most games close……but I don’t like them enough to play them to win the ACC or National Championship.
