2019 Colorado Buffaloes College Football Preview
BET ON THE COLORADO BUFFALOES
50,183 Seat Stadium
Laviska Shenault and the Colorado Buffaloes have a whopping 4.5 win total for the 2019 season, which seems a bit low for a team with a legitimate Heisman candidate on offense in a weak conference. However, the Buffaloes schedule is doing them no favors, with no true cupcakes on the schedule.
The Buffaloes start off the season against Colorado State, an in-state rival that projects to be the worst team they see all year. After that, the Buffaloes host and up-and-coming Nebraska team followed by Air Force in the non-conference. Colorado State and Air Force are winnable games, but they are not locks.
The Pac-12 did them no favors with the lack of Oregon State on the schedule and every single Pac-12 team they play is a favorite to win more games than the Buffaloes. The games to capitalize on are vs. Arizona and UCLA, but even then I would guess those lines end up being very close in favor of the visitors.
Colorado Buffaloes Offense
Steven Montez is a returning starter at the QB position and I think he is a very solid quarterback. Montez threw for 2800 yards and a TD:INT ratio over 2 last season and he did not have a healthy helper for most of the season.
The running back position is a major concern for this team, as their lead returning rusher ran for 43 yards last year. However, I am not incredibly concerned here as they do get a good talent in Jaren Mangham coming in as a true freshman.
This offense will rely on elite receiver Laviska Shenault to keep the chains moving and I think he is very capable of doing so on his own. Shenault will be in the conversation as the best receiver in the country and I expect him to put up numbers before leaving for the NFL after the season.
Without a solid RB right now, I think it's fair to assume that we could see the Buffaloes try to get him 14-20 touches a game if possible, which will really boost his stats.
Colorado Buffaloes Defense
The defense is the big concern with this team as they only return 5 starters from a team that allowed 380 yards a game last year. This defense lacks star power and depth, something that is almost guaranteed to really hurt.
The front seven has 3 returning starters and is full of question marks. I expect the line and the linebackers to generally struggle, especially early in the season when these young guys are getting their feet under them.
The bad news for the Buffaloes is that 3 of their most winnable games are in their first 4 matchups, not giving them time to get comfortable.
The secondary provides even more questions as they lose both safeties and have had 5 secondary members leave the program in the last year other than the 2 that graduated. This means you are going to be dealing with a lack of depth AND experience at the safety position, one that will be quickly exposed be defenses in today's game.
Colorado Buffaloes Special Teams
Special teams was not a strength last year for the Buffaloes overall, but it shouldn't be a major concern considering the other team issues. They were only 68% on field goals, but they did not miss an extra point.
This tells me that there isn't a reason to be worried about a disaster on special teams, as they do have multiple kickers capable of being serviceable.
Colorado Buffaloes Season Prediction
I think that this offense will be relatively side, but the defense will be the downfall. I expect to be betting a lot of overs on Colorado game totals. That being said, there are almost no easy wins and they would need a relatively large upset to clear the 4.5 win total if they could beat the 4 relatively close opponents.
I like the under on the Buffaloes team win total of 4.5
