College Football Betting Preview: Michigan St vs. Arizona St – Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019

by Mark Daloisio | October 29, 2019 |

The Arizona State Sun Devils (2-0, 0-0 away) travel to Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan to take on the Michigan State Spartans (2-0, 2-0 home) in a Big-10 vs Pac-12 matchup.

Last week Arizona St played host to Sacramento State and struggled in a 19-7 win. Michigan St took care of W Michigan at home 51-17. These two met last season in Arizona and the Sun Devils upset the Spartans 16-13.

Arizona State Betting Preview

Head coach Herm Edwards did a nice job in his first season with the Sun Devils, but this year he must overcome youth.  That youth showed, at least on the offensive end, in a 19-7 win vs Sacramento St last week.

25 freshmen saw action in the opener vs Kent St last week, but apparently one game is not enough.  The defense played well holding Sac St to just 7 points and they did the same last week in a 30-7 win vs Kent St.

The offense stumbled its way through the game vs a team who was ranked 115th in total defense…in the FCS.  That is a bad defense.

Arizona St led just 3-0 at the half and just 9-0 heading into the 4th quarter.  To be held to just 3 field goals vs that defense is pretty pathetic. They added a fourth field goal early in the quarter to make it 12-0 before the Hornets finally scored to cut the lead to 12-7 with a little over 6 minutes to play.

Arizona St scored it one and an only touchdown with 4:42 left in the game. It was not a sustained drive either, but a 72 yards touchdown pass to make the final 19-7. For how horrible the offense appeared to be QB Jayden Daniels did throw for 304 yards on 17 of 27 passing.

The running game could only manage a meager 91 yards vs Sac St. The offense needs to get better real fast, they play against a real defense this week.

Michigan State Betting Preview

They say the biggest improvement a team can make is between its first and second games.  That is probably true in regard to the Michigan St offense. After a sluggish start vs Tulsa, they came around in a 51-17 win vs W Michigan last week.

They gained 582 total yards and 31 first downs, and the offense was balanced with 331 passing & 251 rushing. The offense took charge early scoring on its first three possessions to jump out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.  QB Brian Lewerke passed for 314 yards, with 3 TD passes.

RB Elijah Collins had 17 carries for 192 yards rushing. They also greatly improved in mistakes. They were only penalized twice this week compared to 14 in the opener.

The only area that got worse was in turnovers.  After having none if the first game, they turned it over two times in game number two.

Michigan St has a tendency over the years of being conservative on offense, relying on a good run game and defense.  They are hoping to be a little less predictable on offense this year.

They are certainly looking better after last week.  The Spartan defense continues to shine this season leading the country against the run and has 9 sacks in its first two games.

I am a huge Herm Edwards fan, but this team has taken a step backward from last season with how young it is this year.  The offense has really struggled vs much lesser competition and having to travel for the first time this season against one of the better defenses in the country is not an ideal situation.

Arizona State’s defense has looked strong but is also stepping up in class and will wear out as the game goes along. Michigan St may not score 51 again, but they won’t have to. Michigan St 37 Arizona St 17
