Previous Matchups

This will be the first time in the history of these two programs that they will play each other. They have not played in the regular season or in the bowl season and therefore, there are no previous matchup stats to list for this game.

Auburn Tigers Preview

The Tigers’ offense is led by freshman quarterback Bo Nix.  Nix had a wonderful debut in the SEC, completing 57% of his passes for 2,366 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He only averaged 6.7 yards per attempt, but he only threw six interceptions.  The Auburn offensive line did a good job of protecting Nix, only allowing him to be sacked 15 times all season.

The running game was spread out, so much in fact, that five players gained at least 275 yards on the season.  Sophomore Jatarvious Whitlow led the way with 739 yards on 147 carries and nine touchdowns.  He averages five yards per carry.

The next leading scorer on the ground was Nix, who gained 301 yards and scored seven touchdowns this season.

Sophomore wide receiver leads the Tigers’ receiving corps with 55 receptions for 801 yards and eight touchdowns.  He is averaging 14.6 yards per catch.

Junior Eli Stove has caught 36 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns.  Nine different receivers have caught touchdown passes this season for a Tiger offense that averages 421.1 yards and 34 points per game.

Minnesota Golden Gophers Preview

The Golden Gophers’ offense is led by sophomore quarterback Tanner Morgan.  Morgan had a sensational season, completing 66% of his passes for 2,975 yards, good for 25th in the nation.

He threw 28 touchdown passes, which was tied for 16th in the nation, and threw just six interceptions.  Morgan averages 10.3 yards per attempt, but was sacked 30 times.

In Minnesota’s signature win of 2019 against Penn State, Morgan threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns. The Minnesota running game has three players over 400 yards rushing on the season, led by senior Rodney Smith.

Smith has carried the ball 212 times for 1,094 yards and eight touchdowns on the season.  Smith averages 5.2 yards per carry.

Sophomore Mohamed Ibrahim has 94 carries for 464 yards and six touchdowns, and senior Shannon Brooks has 73 carries for 408 yards and two touchdowns.  The Golden Gophers have gained 2,108 yards on the ground and scored 24 touchdowns.

Minnesota touts two 1,000-yard receivers.  Sophomore Rashad Bateman has caught 57 passes for 1,170 yards, which is good for 13th in the nation.  His 11 touchdowns are tied for 14th in the nation, and his average of 20.5 yards per reception is good for 11th in the nation.

Senior Tyler Johnson has caught 74 passes for 1,114 yards, which is 18th in the nation, and his 14 touchdowns are also tied for 14th in the nation.  The Gophers have averaged 426.8 yards and 34.5 points per game.

Handicapping Breakdown

This game is about 9 days away from being played and a lot can happen over that two weeks. For now, we are going to lean to Minnesota based on the fact that Auburn is playing with a freshman QB and Minnesota has a very strong running game.

That being said, it is entirely too far ahead for us to give out an official play so Minnesota will only be a lean for now. When injuries start coming in and we can tell who is playing, determine the motivation of both teams and judge the line movement, we will give out our official play. Check back the day of the game!

Update: We are going to stick to our guns and play Minnesota with the points as a Regular Play. We are thinking that Minnesota will keep this game close and by buying the spread up to +8 (-130) you are giving yourself a major edge. Take the points here!

Regular Play: Minnesota Golden Gophers +8
