2019 Utah Utes College Football Preview
The 2018 Utah Utes finished the season with a record of 9-5 after losing the Pac-12 Championship game to the Washington Huskies by a score of 3-10 and losing in the Holiday Bowl to the Northwestern Wildcats by a score of 20-31.
Utah had an average offense but one of the best defenses last season and if Tyler Huntley to injury they would’ve had a better chance of winning against Washington and likely making a better bowl game.
They have seven starters returning from the team last year on offense as well as another seven starters returning on defense.
Utah had an average offense last season averaging 28.07 points per game which was below the 29.59 average for the rest of college football. They averaged 183.07 rushing yards per game which was above the 176.73 average for the rest of college football. They averaged 213.93 passing yards per game which was below the 230.12 average for the rest of college football.
The Utes defense was one of the best in college football last season allowing 19.43 points per game which ranked 17th in college football. They allowed an average of 100.43 rushing yards per game which ranked 5th in college football. They allowed an average of 215.29 passing yards per game which is below the 230.12 average for the rest of college football.
Utah had one of the best defenses in the country last season ranking 17th in points allowed and 5th in rushing yards allowed per game. They return seven starters from the defense last season and still have one of the best secondaries as well as defensive lines this season.
The offense may have growing pains as they have a young and inexperienced offensive lines. We’ll examine the offense and defense of the Utes and give our prediction of where they will finish this season. Let’s begin by taking a look at the offense.
The offense of the Utes last season wasn’t anything special as they were below average in scoring as well as passing. However, they were much more explosive prior to the injury to Tyler Huntley who will be returning from injury this season.
The running game of the Utes was above average though and they return one of the best running backs in college football this season in Zack Moss. Their one weakness though is a big one in their inexperience along the offensive line.
If the line is able to gel together then this team will be a title contender in the PAC-12 this season.
The Defense of Utah was one of the stingiest in the country ranking 17th in points allowed per game as well as 5th in rushing yards allowed per game.
They return seven starters and only lost a backup on the defensive line which will likely lead to another run stuffing defense allowing few yards per game.
The secondary is another strength of the defense and remains much intact from last year. This will be the side of the ball that will be a huge strength of the team this season.
2019 Utah Outlook
Utah had a great season last year winning the PAC-12 South they enter the season as the favorites to win the division again. They return seven starters on offense including Tyler Huntly and Zack Moss, but their weakness is the offensive line, but the line does have talent.
The defense remains much intact after ranking 17th in points allowed and 5th in rushing yards allowed per game last season. The had one of the toughest schedules in the PAC-12 last season but the schedule is easier this season which should help increase their win total.
The total of 9 is the same amount of wins the Utes had last season this year they return a lot of talent on both sides of the ball as well as having an easier schedule which is why I think this could be an 11 win team this season and possibly go undefeated making the over 9 an easy call for Utah this season.
