MATCHUP AT A GLANCE
When: Nov. 28-Dec. 1, 2019
Course: Leopard Creek Country Club
Location: Malelane, South Africa
Current Champion: David Lipsky
This week, the pro’s on the Euro Tour will head to South Africa for the Alfred Dunhill Championship. This tournament will tee off on November 28, 2019 and play through December 1, 2019.
This tournament is one of four tournaments played in South Africa and is sponsored by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour. The tournament was started in 2000 and has run consecutively each year with the exception of 2017, when they did not have the tournament due to course renovations.
When you are doing your research this week, you want to make sure you are not confusing this tournament with the much larger Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The Alfred Dunhill Championship is played in South Africa, where as the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is played in Scotland.
Leopard Creek Country Club Golf Course Details
The Alfred Dunhill Championship is played at the Leopard Creek Country Club in Malelane, South Africa. Malelane is located about 4 hours east of Pretoria.
The course that they will play on was designed by Gary Player back in 1996. The course did have some major renovations in 2017, which was the year that they did not have this tournament.
The course plays as a Par 72 and measures 7,287 yards. The course is somewhat easy to score on and permitting you avoid the defenses of the course, your golfer should have no issues with competing.
The main defenses of the course are the trees and water hazards that are littered among the course. This course sits next to Kruger National Park so there are plenty of trees for the wildlife in the area and lots of water hazards.
There are lakes, rivers and ponds and if golfers are not careful, this could be a real headache to play on.
The fairways here are average width however if golfers venture out into the rough, they are in trouble. The rough is nasty and can be very trying at times.
The greens are now Bermuda Grass. They were changed over in 2018 from Bentgrass and they are protected by some tight bunkers.
Alfred Dunhill Championship Golfers
Let me start by saying that I am not a personal fan of this tournament. There are only about 12-15 golfers that legitimately have a chance of winning, another 20 that we have watched over the years but have no chance at winning and about 120 additional golfers that quite frankly I’ve never heard of.
Zander Lombard at 28/1 – Zander Lombard is my first golfer this week. Lombard is from South Africa and has the experience on this course to give him a major edge. He finished in 3rd place here last year and has played a total of 3 times at this course. Lombard is in great form, finishing with a T8 last time out in the Nedbank Golf Challenge. At 28/1, he is one of the better values in this field.
Matthew Jordan at 33/1 – Jordan is one of the younger golfers on the tour and has really stepped up his game lately. He is coming off a 4th and 8th place finish on the Challenge Tour and each time he has gotten a chance to play on the European Tour, he has really done well. His last tournament on the European Tour was the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where he finished with a T5. At 33/1, this could be his spot to shine and get his 1st tournament win on the Euro Tour.
Calum Hill at 40/1 – I’ve played Hill over the past few weeks and he has given us some hope. He has made the cut in 6 straight tournaments and as one of the younger guys on tour, he has played really well. He is coming off a 48th place finish on the PGA Tour, in the Mayakoba Golf Classic and I think he stands a very strong chance at winning this week.
