Numbers To Watch
To win skins competitions, you need to be consistent and be able to make birdies. Rory McIlroy ranks 12th in his birdie average on Tour for this season and just averaged 4.33 per round. His teammate Johnson has only played 12 competitive rounds this year but was 13th last season at 4.21.
In total, they have 159 birdies between them in 40 rounds this year, which is 3.98 average, and are both two of the four longest hitters on Tour. This smells like great potential success, but you cannot overlook their competition.
Wolff has had a solid run at success. He won the 2019 NCAA individual title at Oklahoma State in May, turned professional in June, and then got his first Tour win at the 3M Open in July. This 21-year-old is 11th already on Tour in strokes gained off the tee for this season.
Fowler, who coincidentally also played at Oklahoma State, has five Tour victories and is 38th in total strokes gained for this year. He is currently sitting in the World Golf Ranking at 26, and has finished in the top three in all four majors.
Both of these matchups are going to be great for golf and for the public to see life in sports starting to come back. Betting on the event will make it even more interesting.
There will be a lot of value to bet on Fowler and Wolff, and I believe they also will make for a competitive game. However, I think the team combo of McIlroy and Johnson will be enough to handle any situation thrown at them.
You are competing against one of the best golfers in McIlroy, and who has been on a ridiculous hot streak coming off of last year. Johnson has moved up and down over the years, but is still an excellent golfer. That alone, makes me confident in both of these guys to seal a victory and to use the winnings for their selection of charities.
