This week, the European Tour stops off in Dubai for the 31st running of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The Omega Dubai Desert Classic is played each year as part of the European Tour in either January or February. This year, the tournament falls on the week of January 23-26 and should be one of the top tournaments to start the season.
Emirates Golf Club Details
The Dubai Desert Classic is played at Emirates Golf Club in the Dubai, United Arab Emirates. More specifically, the tournament is played on the Majlis Course at Emirates Golf Club.
Many of the top golfers in the world have won and had success here at Emirates Golf Club. Those golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Sergio Garcia have all won on the course.
The course was designed back in 1988 by Karl Litten and is a Par 72 layout that measures 7,353 yards. This is your typical desert course that is very flat but the difference between this course and some others that they will play on this year is these fairways can be very tricky.
The fairways are hard and fast! Watching the tape from the past few years, it looks as if the tee shots travel much further after the landing because of these hard fairways so the Approach game very important here.
Besides the hard fairways, they will also have water involved on 10 holes. Most of these water hazards are really not too much of a big deal and nothing to really stress over but they are there so we want to mention them.
The greens are a bit tricky as they are Bermuda Tiff Eagle so when you start handicapping, look for those that are experienced on these greens. They are not really too fast but with any desert course, they will be dry and therefore, it is a crap shoot on what the day will bring.
Omega Dubai Desert Classic Golfers
Let me first start off by saying you can’t go wrong this week with someone like Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick or Louis Oosthuzien however because their odds are so incredibly low this week, I will look for value elsewhere.
Jazz Janewattananond +5050 – There is no golfer on tour with stronger overall form than Jazz. In his last 4 tournaments, Jazz has two wins, one 3rd and one 4th place finish. The guy is playing some really hot golf right now and heads to Dubai to play in this year’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic for the first time. I love his odds at 50/1 and think he brings a ton of value this week. Important: When you play Jazz, play him at Bookmaker. Most sportsbooks have him at 25/1 however our friends at Bookmaker have him at +5050!!! Get the most bang for your buck!
Victor Perez +3300 – Since missing the cut at the KLM Classic, Victor Perez has caught fire! Since that tournament, he has a win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a 16th at the Open De France, 4th at the WGC-HSBC Championship, 2nd at both the Turkish Airlines Open and Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and a 20th from the DP World Tour Championship. He is the pillar of consistency on the Euro Tour and my top play this week!
Rafa Cabrera Bello +3500 – Rafa is a previous winner of this tournament, taking home the trophy in 2012 and nearly winning again in 2016. He did miss the cut here last year but that was during a stretch where he made the cut in 13 straight tournaments and simply had an off week. Shaun Norris +10000 – Norris played here last year and didn’t come out exactly how we would want but his recent form trumps his course history beings he only played here one time. He comes in off a 6th place finish last week and has now finished inside the top 6 in 5 of the last 7 tournaments he played in. His odds of 100/1 are simply too appealing to ignore.
