This week, the pro’s from the European Tour will travel 40 minutes north of Roma, Italy to Largo Olgiata, Italy for the Italian Open.
This tournament has been around since 1925 and has been utilized on the official European Tour as one of their featured tournaments since 1972.
The tournament is now part of the European Tour’s Rolex Series and now has a total prize pool of $7 million dollars.
Last year, we witnessed Thorbjorn Olesen shoot a -22 to win by 1 stroke over 2 time winner, Francesco Molinari.
Olgiata Golf Club – West Course Details
The Tournament is held at the Olgiata Golf Club and will be played on their West Course. This course is a Par 71 and measures 7,566 yards. One thing to be aware of, there are three Par 5’s on this course, which is part of the reason for the distance.
It is a long course, which leads us to look for golfers that have some length in their swing.
While it is very long, it is also wide, meaning the fairways are not really an issue here in Italy. The best way to describe this course is a parklands course that is very big.
There are some hazards that golfers need to be aware of. First and foremost, there is water in play here in Italy. Water plays a role in at least 5 holes.
There is also some spacious bunkers that lay up right near the greens. The greens are very big but they are protected by these bunkers. Its simply, if the golfers hit it up on the greens they will be fine….but if they come up short, they will have issues getting out of these deep bunkers.
Italian Open System Attributes
Our key stat this week is going to be Greens In Regulation. Need to hit those greens and not fall prey to these bunkers. We also want to pay attention to those golfers that have some length off the tee and those that have some long irons.
Finally, we will use recent form as one of our major factors in finding our golfers. This is the first time most of these golfers will have played on this course so not really much else we should be worrying about.

Matthew Fitzpatrick +2200 at MyBookie
I think we will see a much different Fitzpatrick this week and that has led to him being our top golfer. Fitzy hasn’t really been in all that great shape lately but this course fits his mold much better than some recent courses have. He has those strong iron play that you want to see and also has the Greens in Reg’s numbers that are a must to do well here. His odds are fairly decent considering he has 2 top 5 finishes in his last 5 tournaments overall.
This week, we have 4 additional golfers but the only way to receive them is in our Spooky Express FREE Golf Newsletter. This golf newsletter is emailed out to all of our clients that are signed up, normally on Tuesday Evening, around dinner time.
