Memorial Tournament Handicapping Preview and PGA Betting Tips

by Earl Campbell | July 13, 2020 |

Welcome to the Spooky Express’s weekly golf breakdown, where we dive in head first to this week’s PGA Golf Tournament and look for your best options for betting.  In this week’s article, we will take a look at the course, course history, recent form and many other variables that we feel will have a bearing on the outcome of this week’s tournament.  Without any further delay, let’s take a look at the Memorial Tournament.

Memorial Tournament Details

Current Champion: Patrick Cantlay

Dates: July 16-19, 2020

Prize Pool: $8,500,000

The Memorial Tournament will take place starting Thursday, July 16 and run for 4 consecutive days until Sunday, July 19, 2020. This is an invitation only tournament, so there are only 120 golfers competing this week for their share of the prize pool. This is one of the oldest tournaments on tour and has been played each year since 1976.

Muirfield Village Golf Club Details

Muirfield Village Golf Club – Dublin, Ohio

Par 72

7,392 yards

The Memorial Tournament is played at Muirfield Village Golf Club, which is the same course that the pro’s played last week in the Workday Charity Open.  Muirfield Village is a golf course that was developed around a community and neighborhood just north of Columbus, Ohio.

The course was designed by the great Jack Nicklaus and one of the iconic landmarks at Muirfield Village Golf Club is a statue of Mr. Nicklaus with a younger golfer.

The course is set up with four Par 3’s, ten Par 4’s and four Par 5’s.  The total length of the course is just under 7400 yards and plays out as a Par 72.  The course itself is unique in the fact that the Par 3’s are all very short, under 200 yards each, but the Par 4’s play very long!

The fairways at Muirfield Village are pretty easy to hit.  They are very big and are wide so the pro’s really shouldn’t struggle too much with hitting the fairways.  The problem becomes when they veer off course and land in the rough.

The rough at Muirfield Village is absolutely miserable to try to recover from.  If you are going to play those golfers that sort of get wild with their shots on the fairways, you could find yourself with a golfer that will struggle all week long.

The greens at Muirfield Village are bullet fast and can be hard to judge.  Golfers will need to be careful with their approach shots and even more careful with their putters.  If you have a golfer that can’t putt and can’t hit the fairways, you might as well not even play because there is no chance your guy will win this tournament.

Memorial Tournament System Attributes

One of the first attributes we will focus on is Strokes Gained: Tee To Green.  Each year, the winner of the Memorial Tournament seems to rank high in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green.  This is mainly due in part to those guys that miss the fairways, and lose those strokes, are going to have a hard time to recover and play well on this course.

Additionally, we want to focus on Greens in Reg. Putting their ball on the greens is going to be very important here at Muirfield Village and therefore we will use Greens In Reg numbers as our second most important attribute.  The rest of our attributes are listed below in the order of importance:

  • Strokes Gained: Tee To Green
  • Greens In Reg
  • Strokes Gained: Approach
  • Par 5 Scoring
  • Strokes Gained: Putting
  • Birdie or Better %
  • Strokes Gained: Off The Tee

Memorial Tournament Golfers

Patrick Cantlay +1400 at MyBookie for 2 Units

Well, we went with him last week and it didn’t work out so well for us but no sense in really changing much up since they are playing on the same course.  We really like Cantlay again this week and won’t change our opinions that he can win again on this course.  Simply put, he fits this course. He is a previous winner, winning this tournament last year, and is in great form.
