PGA Barracuda Championship Handicapping Breakdown and Free Plays

If the Pro’s of the PGA aren’t playing in the WGC-St. Jude’s Invitational, chances are they will be playing in the 22nd annual Barracuda Championship. The Barracuda Championship will get underway on Thursday, July 30, 2020, and play through into Sunday, August 2, 2020.

This tournament started off back in 1999 and at that time, it was referred to as the Reno-Tahoe Open. The tournament has normally been played each year in August, as an alternate event opposite of the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational, however last year, it was moved up to July and now serves as the alternate for the WGC-FedEx St. Jude’s Invitational.

Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Course Details

The 22nd Annual Barracuda Championship will be played at the Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Course, located in nearby Truckee, California. The tournament had been played at Montreux G&CC every year since it’s initiation, with this year being the first at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood Course.

The course was designed in 2004 by Jack Nicklaus. This is the only time during the summer that the PGA stops in the west on tour. The ball will go far, much further than most pros are accustomed to so don’t let the distance of this course scare you.

The course plays out as a Par 71 golf course and measures 7, 390 yards. One thing to keep in mind when it comes to Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Course is that the elevation is at an average above sea level.

That means the ball will fly longer and further. Think of it as the equivalent of the Colorado Rockies in MLB hitting more home runs in their home field, because of the elevation.

This is one of the few tournaments that actually utilize the Modified Stableford scoring system. In case you are unaware or just need a refresher, the way the scoring works is as follows:

  • +8 Albatross (3 Strokes Under Par)
  • +5 Eagle (2 Strokes Under Par)
  • +2 Birdie (1 Stroke Under Par)
  • 0 Par
  • -1 Bogey (1 Stroke Over Par)
  • -3 Double Bogey or worse (2 Strokes or More Over Par)

Barracuda Championship Golfers

Alex Noren +2500

Noren is a 10-time winner on the Euro Tour however he has really struggled getting that first win here in the states, winning on the PGA Tour.  While this tournament is a weaker tournament, his skill set is ideal for this tournament.  This could be the week that Noren cashes in with a PGA Tour win.
