This week, the pro’s of the PGA stop off at Pacific Palisades, California for the Genesis Open.  The Genesis Open will take place from Thursday, February 14, thru Sunday, February 17 at Riviera Country Club.  Before we get into the details of this week, let’s take a look at how we did last week.  Once again, as much as it sounds like a broken record, we finished up with another Top 5 finish, this week in 4th place with Jason Day.  Day played nice but Phil Mickelson showed he is the king the Pebble Beach and ran away with the win on the final day.

Genesis Open Overview

The Genesis Open is one of the oldest tournaments played on the PGA Tour, being played in some fashion under various names since 1926!  The tournament was formerly known as the LA Open, Northern Trust Open, and Nissan Open, before becoming the Genesis Open in 2017.

Riviera Country Club Course Details

There is no doubt about it, Riviera Country Club is one of the harder courses the pros will see this year on tour.   Riviera Country Club was designed by George C Thomas Jr and has hosted three majors, the 1948 US Open and the 1983 and 1995 PGA Championship.

The course only plays as a Par 71 but it is long at 7,322 yards.  The fairways are very tough to hit and make this an interesting tournament.  The greens at Riviera are Poa Annua and are very fast and very tricky!  This course is long and puts a huge emphasis on the on Greens in Reg and Ball Striking, which we will get into a little later. Riviera Country Club is composed of four Par 3’s, eleven Par 4’s and three par 5’s.

It seems that the tournament has been dominated in recent years by those golfers that are long off the tee.  I think we will see that continue this year, as there really is no reason to believe that anything will change.

System Attributes

The top two attributes this week are without a doubt Driving Distance and Greens in Reg.  We will also put some emphasis on course history and recent form.  All of the attributes that we will use this week are as follows:

  • Driving Distance
  • Greens in Reg
  • Recent Form
  • Par 4 Scoring
  • Course History
  • Strokes Gained: Tee To Green
  • Driving Accuracy
  • Strokes Gained: Approach

This week, I have gone through all of the offshore sportsbooks and I strongly recommend you play your golf plays over at Bookmaker.  This week, in particular, they have by far the best odds and no one else is really competing with them. I have done the legwork and will be playing all of the plays at Bookmaker.

Bryson DeChambeau +1791 at Bookmaker for 2 units

I'm not sure there is a better golfer on tour right now than Bryson DeChambeau.  He comes in off a 5th place finish at the Saudi International and a win prior at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.  He probably won't get as much attention on the odds because in his two times playing here at Riviera Country Club, he finished in 41st and withdrew.  That being said, no one sets up stronger in the attributes than DeChambeau.  He is #1 on tour in Par 4 Scoring, #3 in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green, 7th in Greens in Reg, 11th in Driving Accuracy and 18th in Strokes Gained: Approach.

Justin Thomas +1352 at Bookmaker for 2 units

If you've been following me here at Spooky Express over the past 3 years, you know that I really like it when a golfer improves, whether it is at the course or in recent history.  That is how I see Thomas and Riviera Country Club.  He has played here 4 times and gotten better since the first tournament.  Last year, he really made strides forward and finished in 9th place.  Thomas finished in 3rd place 2 weeks ago at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and I expect a big week out of Thomas this week. Much like DeChambeau, Thomas is really strong this week with attributes, ranking 1st in Strokes Gained: Tee To Gree and 1st in Strokes Gained: Approach.  He is 8th in Par 4 Scoring and 9th in Greens in Reg.  Jump on the Justin Thomas bandwagon this week!

Matt Kuchar +5550 at Bookmaker for 1 unit

Kuchar has been nothing short of spectacular this year and now comes into a tournament that he has played really well at.  He has recorded 2 wins in his last 6 tournaments, which is strong but he also has barely missed winning at the Phoenix Open, which would have put him at 3 wins in 6 tournaments.  Kuchar has always played well here and comes in at much better form this year, then in years past.

Adam Hadwin +6050 at Bookmaker for 1 unit

Hadwin has always played well here at The Genesis Open.  Hadwin finished in 22nd place in 2105, 16th in 2016, 34th in 2017 and really came on strong last year with a 6th place finish. Hadwin is in strong form right now, with a 18th placed finish at last weeks Pebble Beach Pro-Am.  Hadwin is playing well and at 60/1, he is a must play for me!
