PGA Travelers Championship Handicapping Preview and Betting Tips

by Earl Campbell | June 22, 2020 |

Welcome to the Spooky Express’s weekly golf breakdown, where we dive in head first to this week’s tournament and look for your best options for betting.  In this week’s article, we will take a look at the course, course history, recent form and many other variables that we feel will have a bearing on the outcome of this week’s tournament.  Without any further delay, let’s take a look at the Travelers Championship.

The pro’s of the PGA head to Cromwell, Connecticut this week for the Travelers Championship.  Before we talk about this week, let’s briefly go over last week at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Last week, we came out and nailed our 3rd straight winner with Webb Simpson at +2800! Simpson was in the Top 5 pretty much throughout the tournament and came firing on Sunday, to beat out a handful of other players that were in contention. With that said, let's move on to this week and shoot for our 4th straight winner in golf betting.

Travelers Championship Tournament Details

Current Champion: Chez Reavie

Dates: June 25-28, 2020

Prize Pool: $7,400,000

The Pro’s of the PGA will head north this week for the Travelers Championship.  The Travelers Championship is played each year as part of the normal routine of PGA events, following the US Open, however this year, there were some changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Travelers Championship will take place from Thursday, June 25, 2020 and run through Sunday, June 28, 2020 in Cromwell, Connecticut at TPC River Highlands.

The Travelers Championship has been around since 1952, then known as the Insurance City Open.  Since then, the tournament has changed names several times from the Insurance City Open to the Greater Hartford Open to the Buick Championship and now, the Travelers Championship.

The Travelers Championship is played each year in the month of June, with the only exception being in 2016 when the tournament was moved due to the Summer Olympics..

There have been seven golfers that have won the Travelers Championship on multiple occasions including Billy Casper who holds the record for the most wins with four in 1963, 1965, 1068 and 1978. Bubba Watson has won here three times, in 2010, 2015 and 2018.

There are six golfers that have won this tournament two times including Arnold Palmer in 1956 and 1960, Paul Azinger in 1987 and 1989, Phil Mickelson in 2001 and 2002, Peter Jacobson in 1984 and 2003, Stewart Cink in 1997 and 2008.

Cut Information

The Travelers Championship has a normal cut of the Top 70 plus ties.  Due to the fact that this tournament is a smaller tournament because of the invite-only status, that will mean that a larger percentage of the golfers will make it through the cut, making it a bit more difficult to win on the weekend.

The Course

TPC River Highlands – Cromwell, Connecticut

Par 70 – 6,844 yards

TPC River Highlands has been the site host of the Travelers Championship since 1991.  The course is located in Cromwell, Connecticut and is the only trip to Connecticut that the PGA Tour will make in 2019. The course was originally designed by Robert Ross but redesigned in 1982 by Pete Dye.

The course is a 6,844 yard golf course that plays as a Par 70. There are four Par 3’s, twelve Par 4’s and just two Par 5’s on the golf course.   The greens at TPC River Highlands can be tricky, mainly in part due to the fact that there is a mixture of both Bentgrass and Poa Annua on the greens.

The fairways at TPC River Highlands are pretty generous and most golfers will have no issues with hitting them. The problem becomes those that miss the fairways and end up in the rough, will be challenging to get back to a scorable hole.

Travelers Championship System Attributes

TPC River Highlands is a long ball hitter course.  Golfers that are long off the tee always seem to do well here.  A majority of winners over the past 10 years, have been long ball drivers that have more distance than most other golfers.

You’re also going to want to make sure you look for golfers with decent Strokes Gained: Tee To Green numbers for the Travelers Championship.  The fairways aren’t hard to hit but those that miss the fairways are in for a rude awakening with this rough.

The complete list of attributes we are using this week are as follows:

  • Strokes Gained: Tee To Green
  • Total Driving
  • Greens in Reg
  • Bogey Avoidance
  • Birdie or Better %

Single Wagers To Win

Bryson DeChambeau +1400 for 2 Units

Bryson is undeniably one of the hottest golfers on tour right now. This year, he put on some muscle to increase his distance and overall health on the courses and it has paid off drastically.  In his last 5 tournaments, he has finished inside the Top 8 in all 5 tournaments.  Last week, he had a chance to win however he simply couldn’t get past the top groupings and ended up finishing in 8th place in the RBC Heritage.  The week prior, he came from behind and landed in 3rd place in the Charles Schwab Challenge.  DeChambeau is due for a win and with the way this course plays out, it could be this week. His odds aren’t the best, so we will throw 2 units on him this week.
