Rocket Mortgage Classic Handicapping Preview and Betting Tips

by Earl Campbell | June 29, 2020 |

Welcome to the Spooky Express’s weekly golf breakdown, where we dive in head first to this week’s tournament and look for your best options for betting.  In this week’s article, we will take a look at the course, course history, recent form and many other variables that we feel will have a bearing on the outcome of this week’s tournament.  Without any further delay, let’s take a look at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

The pro’s of the PGA head to Detroit, Michigan this week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.  Before we talk about this week, let’s briefly go over last week at the Travelers Championship.

Last week, we were going for our 4th straight winner, after cashing in on 4 straight golf tournaments.  We entered Sunday with Bryson DeChambeau in 5th place and Abraham Ancer in 7th place, as our best two chances to extend our win streak.

Sunday wasn’t our day, as Bryson finished in 6th place and Ancer finished in 11th place.  That is ok, this week starts a new streak!  Let’s get a winner!

Rocket Mortgage Classic Tournament Details

Current Champion: Nate Lashley

Dates: July 2-5, 2020

Prize Pool: $7,300,000

The Rocket Mortgage Classic will take place starting Thursday, July 2 and run for 4 consecutive days until Sunday, July 5, 2020 in Detroit, Michigan.  The Rocket Mortgage Classic has been around only since last year, with it taking over the Quicken Loans National in Potomac, Maryland.

With this being only the 2nd year that the tournament has been played, there really isn’t a ton of information that you can use when handicapping this tournament.

The tournament has a prize pool of $7.3 million dollars.  The winner of this tournament will take home a check for roughly $1.3 Million Dollars.

Cut Information

The Rocket Mortgage Classic has a normal cut of the Top 70 plus ties.

The Course

The tournament will be played at Detroit Golf Club’s North Course in Detroit, Michigan.  The north course was designed by Donald Ross and opened for play in 1916. The course recently underwent some upgrades and is now hosting a PGA Tour event.

The course measures 7,334 yards and plays as a Par 72.  The greens at the Detroit Golf Club are made up of Poa Annua with a blend of bentgrass.  There is plenty of undulation on both the greens and the fairways, which makes us think this will be a fairly difficult course for the pro’s this week.  They are expecting the greens to run at a 12.5 on the stimpmeter, making them the equivalent of Augusta National.

The course itself is lined with trees, and the rough is expected to be cut to 3.5 inches. They will cut the rough on Monday and let it go from there.  I would expect by late Saturday into Sunday, that rough will be very tough and penalizing.

Rocket Mortgage Classic System Attributes

Really tough this week to give attributes on what you should be looking at because this is the first time this tournament has been played.  Sure, we can take an educated guess by looking at the course but that can sometimes fool you. I think your better option this week is to pay close attention to the golfers in decent form. Go with the golfers that have had some recent success and are playing good overall golf.

Single Wagers To Win

Viktor Hovland +2200 at MyBookie

Hovland played well here last year and is in great form, two things that I’m paying attention to this week.  He finished in 13th place here in 2019, on his first real year on the PGA Tour.  This year, he should fair a bit better with the experience under his belt. Look for Hovland to come out and set the pace early and compete for the win on Sunday!
