There are 16 teams left in the NCAA Basketball tournament, and two of them will meet up Thursday in San Jose, as the West Virginia Mountaineers head out on the road to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs. This game is out of the West Region, with the winner taking on the winner of Gonzaga and Xavier. The West Virginia Mountaineers are 28-8 following their second round win over Notre Dame.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs beat South Dakota State and Northwestern to get to this point. The Bulldogs have just one loss all season, which came to Brigham Young. Bulldogs Win with Defense
Out of the West Coast Conference, the Gonzaga Bulldogs are incredibly tough on defense. The Bulldogs finished sixth in the nation, allowing 61.1 points per game. In the first two tournament games this March, Gonzaga allowed an average of 59.5 points per game.
Gonzaga’s top scorer this season has been guard Nigel-Williams Goss. He is scoring more than 16 points per game for a Bulldogs team that is averaging 83.9 points per game. This is the 20th season that the Bulldogs have been in the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga has never reached the Final Four.
West Virginia with High Pressure
What the West Virginia Mountaineers are known for, is their ability pressure the basketball. The Mountaineers are going to want to pressure the Bulldogs guards all over the court. West Virginia allowed just 66.8 points per game, which was a surprise for how quickly the Mountaineers want to play the game.
Jevon Carter was fantastic in the win against Notre Dame. Carter is the top scorer for West Virginia with 13.3 points per game. The Mountaineers are out of the Big 12, where they finished in a three way tie with Iowa State and Baylor. West Virginia is looking for their third Final Four in school history.
Mountaineers Pull Upset
The West Virginia Mountaineers are going to win this game. The Mountaineers can really pressure the Gonzaga guards, and that should be the deciding factor. Bob Huggins and his team have a chance to get to the Final Four. Look for the Mountaineers to control this game from start to finish.
What a great season for Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs, but once again, it’s going to finish a little early. The Gonzaga Bulldogs will likely have a better crowd in this game, but no issue for West Virginia.
