The Grade II, $250,000 Bowling Green Stakes will run as Race 11 on the Aug. 1 card at Saratoga.
The event for 4-year-olds and up is set to cover 1 3/8 miles on turf and include names like Sadler’s Joy and Dot Matrix among the field of seven.
Here is a look at the top contenders set for the Bowling Green Stakes.
Sadler’s Joy, Dot Matrix
The morning line favorite coming in at 2/1 is Woodslane’s Farm Sadler’s Joy. Trained by Thomas Albertrani, the 7-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy has a career record of 7-4-10 from 30 starts with earnings of $2,573,160. His 2020 record includes three third-place finishes from four starts.
Sadler’s Joy finished third last time out in the July 4 Manhattan Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. He also finished third in the June 4 Tiller Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont and third in the Feb. 29 Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream, the latter resulting in a 113 Speed Figure.
He will break from post 6 under Javier Castellano.
Another top runner coming in with a morning line at 9/2 is Ten Strike Racing’s Dot Matrix.
The 7-year-old gelding from Freud is 10-5-5 from 34 career starts with earnings of $621,487. His 2020 record includes one victory and one second from four starts.
His last performance was an eight-place effort in the July 4 Manhattan Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. He also took second in the June 4 Tiller Stakes (Black Type) also at Belmont and 11th in the March 21 Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds.
He will break from post 4 under Joel Rosario.
Three Diamonds Farm’s Cross Border is the second-choice coming in at 5/2.
Trained by Michael Maker, the 6-year-old son of English Channel has a career record of 8-5-1 from 25 starts with earnings of $396,971. In 2020, he took one win and two seconds from four starts.
He scored the July 22 Lubash Stakes (Black Type) at Saratoga, fifth in the July 4 Manhattan Stakes (G1) at Belmont, and second in a June 3 allowance optional claiming race also at Belmont. His other big 2020 performance was a second-place effort in the Jan. 25 W.L. McKnight Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream.
Cross Border will break from post 2 under Jose Ortiz.
The rest of the field (post, morning line) is set to include: Marzo (post 1, 8/1); Highland Sky (post 3, 15/1); Channel Maker (post 5, 7/2); and Pillar Mountain (post 7, 12/1).
