The Grade II Eddie Read Stakes down at ole Del Mar will take place as Race 8 of a scheduled 11-race card going to post at 5:30 pm (PT). Seven horses are entered to run for the $250,000 purse. This race is restricted to three-year-olds and upward and will be run on the turf course. The distance for the Eddie Read Stakes will be nine furlongs.
The weather for this day’s events is forecasted to be 74 degrees and partly cloudy. The first weekend of racing at Del Mar on the turf course was a mix of front-running wins as well as off-the-pace victories. Of the contenders today, we will be highlighting three.
Betting Preview: (6) Smooth Like Strait
The class of the class in this race is Smooth Like Strait. In his last six races, all of them being Grade 1 and 2 stakes races, he has not finished out of the top three, and both Grade 2 races resulted in pictures in the winner’s circle. Whenever there is a race in Southern California on the turf, the first thing I look for is what horse is Umberto Rispoli riding.
Rispoli has an incredible knack to get the very most out of a horse, especially on the turf. Seven of the last ten races for this horse have been in Southern California, so he has raced against most of the field already.
None of the horses that he will be facing have finished in front of him in any of those races. Smooth Like Strait appears to be very fond of the turf course at Del Mar with two wins and a place over three starts. His one loss at the track was to Domestic Spending, who appears to be the best older male turf horse at the moment.
Betting Preview: (2) United
The defending Champion of the Eddie Read Stakes is none other than United. Southern California’s leading rider, Flavien Prat, is aboard for this race. Flavien likely has his pick of many horses, so it is always very noteworthy to see who he chooses.
United is a very good horse, and the speed figures (with the exception of his last race) would put him very much in the mix to win this race. There is a definite “Horses for Courses” angle with United due to his two wins and two places over four starts at Del Mar.
Betting Preview: (1) Vintage Print
This race is absolutely loaded with Graded Stakes winners. And then there is Vintage Print. His only stakes attempt was a Grade 3 at Keeneland last July that resulted in an eighth-place finish. He was not able to get the win in his most recent race at Churchill Downs, which was an optional claiming race for $62,500 dollars.
This is the only entry on the card for out-of-town jockey Adam Beschizza and trainer Paulo Lobo. This horse feels like an automatic toss, but there must be a reason why they would ship him across the country and why Beschizza would travel to California for just this race.
