Horse Racing Picks for Oaklawn Park for Arlington Derby Day – Saturday, April 13, 2019
Arkansas Stakes 2019 – April 13, 2019
Today we have one of the last Kentucky Derby prep races going in the Arkansas Derby.
This is a Grade 1 race held at Oaklawn Park.
The Arkansas Derby is run a 1 1/8 mile on the main track.
There will be some main contenders from the West coast entered.
Let’s take a look..
Race 4 – The Count Fleet Sprint Handicap – Grade 3
Not a great betting race with only five horses, but it is a Graded race.
MITOLE – Asmussen/Santana combo. The horse is the speed of the speed and he gets the rail post position. Second race off the layoff will have this one in prime form.
WHITMORE – Class of the field here. Santana hops off to ride MITOLE. This horse has never been worse than second last 10 races. Two horse race if you ask me.
OPERATION STEVIE – In a race full of speed, use this horse to close out a triple. He is the lone closer in a race full of speed.
Race 9 – The Oaklawn Handicap – Grade 2
TENFOLD – Asmussen/Santana combo. I follow this combination of religiously. This horse is second off the layoff producing a solid 92 Beyer. I expect this horse to step it up second time out and give a solid race. Use in all exotics, small wager to win.
QUIP – Another second off the layoff horse having produced a nice 94 Beyer first race back. He is a steady horse who had been in the money 3 of last 4 races with Beyers all in the 94+ range. Jose Ortiz rides and that is a bonus.
LOOKIN AT LEE – Mike Smith rides this other Asmussen entry. Interesting that Santana hops off this horse to ride TENFOLD. Not a good sign for this horse. Deep exotics only.
LONE SAILOR – Amoss/Pratt combo. This horse has the best resume having run in in nothing but Graded Stakes races sine early 2018. This is the third race of the form cycle. He will be in top form for this. He will be closing late. Use in all wagers.
RATED R SUPERSTAR – Interesting horse! His last three races have gone faster and faster, in fact, his last race at 1 1/16 (1:42.3) was best in this entire field with the closing fractions being faster than everyone. This one could be peaking at the right time and the extra ⅛ of a mile could benefit him the most. He will be a price. Worth a shot in exotics.
Race 11 – Rebel Stakes – Grade 1
IMPROBABLE – Most likely the favorite. This Bob Baffert horse comes in off a second place finish in the Rebel Stakes (race 8) on this very track. Four career starts with 3 wins and second. He will be a short price but must use in all wagers.
OMAHA BEACH – Richard Mandella trainee who gets Mike Smith in the saddle. This horses numbers are progressing nicely, 62, 78, 80, 83, 90 and 96. This horse won the second field of horses in the Rebel Stakes (don’t forget there were two fields for the Rebel Stakes, Race 8 and race 10). The bullet works leading up to this 1/45 and 1 of 25. Major win threat.
COUNTRY HOUSE – Joel Rosario rides for Bill Mott. Nobody has been hotter than Bill Mott on the Derby trail. He has snuck in some very good horses and this one is riding just as you want with Beyers increasing steadily from 80, 86 to 87. He has a bad habit of getting off slow, but with a clean break and Rosario riding this closer, I think this one has a shot at being in the money. Use in all exotics.
GRAY ATTEMPT – Caution on this horse. He will not get the distance. He will set the pace being out front, but no way he gets the 1 ⅛. Do not use in any wagers.
LONG RANGE TODDY – WInner of Rebel in Race 8. This one had a dream trip getting the rail all the way around and passing tired horses (IMPROBABLE) in the end to win by a neck. He now gets the outside post and won't have the dream trip as he did before. I think this one will be overbet. Deep exotics only.
