Delaware- First state of the Union and first place I’ve seen stakes racing on a Wednesday for some time. The Obeah Stakes will take place as Race 8 of a scheduled 9-race card going to post at 4:45 pm (ET). 14 horses will be running for the $100,000 purse. This race is restricted to fillies and mares three years old and up and will be run on the main dirt surface.
The distance for the Obeah Stakes will be 8.5 furlongs, also known as 1 1/16 miles. The weather for this day’s events looks warm with possible rain and thunderstorms, so the track may be wet and sloppy. Typical running styles that win over this track in recent history are front runners and those close to the pace. Of the contenders today, we will be highlighting four of the ladies who can get it done come Wednesday, with a heavy focus on good connections coming to Delaware for the first time.
Betting Preview: (2) Crystal Ball
Their recent race history suggests back-to-back wins at the allowance level may have this one outclassed, but let’s take victories as they come. A second at a higher-level stake last summer at Saratoga shows this horse can run in stakes affairs. Luis Saez ships in from New York and is arguably the best jockey in this field. Their running style is front-end speed and likes to set or be close to the pace. Workout times are slow, but for front runners who show a history of speed come race day, I’m not too concerned. Morning line odds are 5/1, and I expect it to drop towards race time.
Betting Preview: (3) Bajan Girl
Their recent race history suggests impressive wins at the allowance level, and stakes placings make this one a contender come Wednesday. Kendrick Carmouche also ships in from New York to ride Bajan Girl, who is coming out of some pretty impressive races. Their running style is that of one who wants to stay close to the pace. Workout times are good in comparison with the group. Morning line odds of 6/1 will also fall come post.
Betting Preview: (8) Miss Marissa
Their recent race history suggests stakes placings and a stake win against Bonny South have me scratching my head at why the morning line odds are 8/1. Jockey Daniel Centeno is back on board from that big-stakes win at Pimlico. She seems to want to stay close to the pace and may surprise some come post time as I expect odds to drop by half.
Betting Preview: (9) Queen Nekia
Their recent race history suggests a stake win this year followed by an impressive fourth against better make this Queen the morning line favorite. Trained by Joseph Saffie Jr., I just don’t love this horse here today in this spot. JC Diaz Jr. is a good jockey, but I think there will be better prices on better jocks in this race. 7/2 morning line will also go down, so I don’t think I can take a short price with this good field, especially as she likes to come from off the pace.
