by Cole Paganelli | February 22, 2021 |

The Grade 3, $600,000 Razorback Handicap will finally run on the Sunday, Feb. 27 card at Oaklawn Park.

The event for 4-year-olds and up covers 1 1/16 miles and will include names like Mr. Freeze, Mystic Guide, and Coastal Defense among the field of seven.

Here is a look at some of the top runners set for the Razorback Handicap:

Betting Preview: Mr. Freeze, Mystic Guide

One of the leading runners coming into the race is Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister’s Mr Freeze. The 6-year-old son of To Honor And Serve is trained by Dale Romans.

He has a career record of 6-4-2 from 19 starts and earnings of $1,595,600. In 2021, he has one off-the-board finish.

Last time out, he finished back in 11th in the Jan. 23 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park. To close out his 2020 season, the runner took fifth in the Clark Stakes presented by Norton Healthcare (G1) at Churchill Downs, registering a 105 Speed Figure. He also took sixth in the Nov. 7 Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Keeneland.

Mr. Freeze will break from post 4 under jockey David Cohen.

He will be up against Godolphin’s Mystic Guide. The 4-year-old Ghostzapper colt is trained by Michael Stidham.

He is 2-2-2 from six career starts with earnings of $193,200.

The runner’s most recent performance was a runner-up effort in the Oct. 10 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, where he registered a 108 Speed Figure. He also scored the Sept. 5 Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) and third in the July 16 Peter Pan Stakes (G3) at Saratoga.

Mystic Guide will break from post 3 under rider Luis Saez.

Betting Preview: Coastal Defense

Another runner to look out for is Albaugh Family Stables and Helen Groves Revocable Trust’s Coastal Defense. The 5-year-old son of Curlin is trained by Dale Romans as well.

He has a career record of 2-2-0 from 10 starts and earnings of $155,266. In 2021, he has one off-the-board run.

That performance was a sixth-place finish in the Jan. 23 Pegasus World Cup. To close out his 2020 season, he ran fourth in the Clark Stakes at Churchill on Nov. 27, which followed a fourth-place run in the Oct. 10 Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland.

Coastal Defense will break from the outside post 7 under rider David Cabrera.

The rest of the field (post, jockey) is set to include: Owendale (post 1, J. Rosario); Silver Prospector (post 2, R. Santana, Jr.); Long Range Toddy (post 5, J. K. Court); and Wells Bayou (post 6, M. Garcia).

One of the names receiving a lot of attention among the field is Godolphin’s Mystic Guide. The runner took a close second in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, and he will be making his 4-year-old campaign debut in the Razorback. He was going to run in the Pegasus World Cup but had to skip over the event due to illness. His connections say the runner has been working well leading up to this race.
