The Grade II San Clemente Stakes will take place as Race 10 of a scheduled 11-race card going to post at 6:30 pm (PT). 12 horses are entered to run for the $200,000 purse. This race is restricted to 3-year-old fillies and will be run on the turf course. The distance for the San Clemente Stakes will be 1 mile.
Weather for this day’s events is forecasted to be 74 degrees and partly cloudy. The first weekend of racing at Del Mar on the turf course was a mix of front-running wins as well as off-the-pace victories. Of the contenders today, we will be highlighting four.
Betting Preview: (2) Going Global
The class in this field is Going Global. Going Global has won her last 5 races, including 3 Grade III Stakes races. When we pair the talent of this horse with the top jockey in Southern California, Flavien Prat, it is tough to see how this filly does not win this race. A look at the past performances shows that Going Global likes to come off the pace and mow the other horses down late. I think we can back up the Brinks truck and unload here, hopefully at or around 1-1.
Betting Preview: (12) Closing Remarks
As I often say when I am handicapping races on the turf in Southern California, it is very hard not to consider a horse ridden by the Lord of the Lawn, Umberto Rispoli. In the last 3 Stakes races that Umberto has ridden Closing Remarks, they have combined for 1 win and 2 places. In the two races that Closing Remarks has placed, Going Global is the horse that beat her. It seems an exacta is in order.
Betting Preview: (6) Equilove
It does not look like there is a lot of pace in this race. Equilove is coming out of a 6-furlong turf sprint where she led wire to wire with jockey Ricardo Gonzalez in the irons. Gonzalez has the mount again, and they are stretching her out, so it is hard to imagine Equilove not being sent hard for the lead. She doesn’t have the class or the speed figure numbers of the rest of the horses in this field. If the early races on the turf are heavily favoring early speed, you might consider a small bet on Equilove.
Betting Preview: (11) Nimbostratus
The horse that I have no interest in backing is Nimbostratus. She is coming off a nice win in a $150,000 optional claiming race over 6 furlongs on the turf course at Santa Anita. When we look at her past performances, we see that her last 3 races at the distance have been very underwhelming with poor speed figures. Abel Cedillo is a very capable jockey, but I do not see this horse being anywhere close to the money at the end of the day.
