The $200,000 Grade II Sheepshead Bay Stakes is the tenth of 11 races on Saturday’s card at Belmont Park. The six horse field of fillies and mares four years old and up will run a mile and three eighths on Belmont’s turf track a little less than an hour and a half before the Kentucky Derby will be run at Churchill Downs.
Betting Preview: Always Shopping
Trainer Todd Pletcher has four horses entered in the Kentucky Derby and also has the favorite in the Sheepshead Bay Stakes. Always Shopping is coming off a runner up finish in the mile and a quarter Orchid Stakes on the turf at Gulfstream, where the five year old mare was nosed out by War Like Goddess after going off as the favorite at even odds.
Her most recent win was in the Grade 3 La Prevoyante Stakes on January 23rd at Gulfstream Park. Always Shopping has two graded stakes victories in 15 career races in which her record is 5-4-1 with earnings of $494,305, and she’ll start from the fourth post position at odds of 2/1.
Betting Preview: My Sister Nat
My Sister Nat spent her three year old campaign in France before relocating to the United States as a four year old and the now six year old mare is making her seventh consecutive graded stakes start. She hasn’t raced since a ninth place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on November 7th, where she slightly outperformed her 25/1 odds in the crowded field of 14.
Her only U.S. win came in August 2020 in the grade 3 Waya Stakes at Saratoga, and her overall record is 3-6-3 in 15 races with $451,672 in earnings. My Sister Nat will start outside in the sixth post position with morning line odds of 5/2 for trainer Chad Brown.
Betting Preview: Magic Attitude
One of two four year old fillies in the field, Magic Attitude made her American debut on September 19th with a victory in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes at a mile and a quarter as the favorite after an impressive stretch run to move from fifth to first. She was also the favorite in her last outing but never got going and finished seventh in the Grade 2 Hillsborough Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on March 6th.
Her other start in the United States resulted in a third place finish, once again as the favorite, in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland on October 10th. Magic Attitude has an overall record of 3-1-2 in nine races with earnings of $306,402 and will start from the inside post position with morning line odds of 4/1.
Free Betting Pick
Three things that Always Shopping has going for her, other than the cool name, is that she’s trained by Todd Pletcher, Magic Attitude is headed in the wrong direction results wise, and My Sister Nat has been idle for six months. I also like a 4-1 exacta with Magic Attitude making a solid run.
