Horse Racing Picks for Tampa Bay Downs – Saturday, March 9, 2019
Bonus horse plays for Saturday.
Aqueduct and Tampa have some Kentucky Derby qualifying races we can look at today.
Santa Anita had one as well, but that track is closed while they look over the cause of 21 horse deaths since opening day.
Tampa Bay Downs
Race 9 – THE HILLSBOROUGH – Grade 2
HAWKSMOOR – Second off the layoff. Bravo rides and we all know what that means. Won his first time off the layoff with a solid 95 Beyer. He should be better and that is scary.
ONTHEMOONAGAIN – Chad Brown/Jose Ortiz. This will be first off the layoff when he ran a 102 Beyer in October in a Grade 1 race. Not the longest of layoffs for a horse. Should be ready to run.
VIVA VEGAS – Third race of the form cycle for this horse in the barn change. Ran a nice 94 Beyer last out, if he is ready for the best form cycle race he will be in the money for sure. Two bullet works coming in; 1 of 8 and 1 of 20.
RYMSKA – Second Chad Brown entry with Irad in the saddle. This is his best distance and this combo cannot be ignored. Use in all wagers.
Race 10 – THE FLORIDA OAKS – Grade 3
Tough race. Many angles to consider with several maiden winners going up against proven winners. We have barn changes and third race of the form cycle horses.
LA FEVE – Chad Brown/ Irad Ortiz again. This is the second start of the barn change to Brown. I expect a good effort.
WINTER SUNSET – Third career race with solid works coming in. Channing Hill rides for Catalano and these two are lethal together on the Churchill/Kentucky circuit. I think this one will be overlooked and we can get some good odds.
STELLAR AGENT – Won with this horse at Saratoga over the summer. Has yet to be out of the money in 3 career starts including Grade 1 and Grade 2 show efforts. Her numbers are going up steadily just as you want, 65, 73, and 82.
Race 11 – THE LAMBHOLM SOUTH TAMPA BAY DERBY – Grade 2 – Derby points race
DREAM MAKER – Interesting horse here. Son of Tapit. Broke his maiden in June of 18. Next race was Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga, just too much too soon. Next race was a Breeders Cup race where the horse got bumped around, clipped heals and pretty sure the rider just pulled him up. Came in last. Takes 4 months off and comes back to win by 9 in an open allowance race with a sharp 89 Beyer. Had a bullet work of 1 of 111 on Feb. 23rd. If this one has it, all figured out he is a legit win threat. That is “IF”.
WELL DEFINED – I think this one is over bet. I would not use.
OUTSHINE – Pletcher beauty! Paid $625,000 for this horse. Rosario rides. This one is interesting. Second race off the layoff with a solid 83 Beyer in return. Use in exotics.
WIN WIN WIN – Most likely favorite. Winner of 3 of 4 with a whopping 99 Beyer last out. Workouts are off the charts; 1 of 75, 1 of 33. My concern is, against who? He will be pressured this time out against some very good horses and he goes two turns for the first time.
TACITUS – My long shot for exotics. Mott has this son of TAPIT for third race of the form cycle. He has the nice rate and closing kick for this race. Jose rides and they add Lasix. He is stepping way up in race class, but Mott is sneaky. Use in deep exotics.
Good luck and thanks for horseracing with Dietz!
