The Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes will take place as Race 4 of a scheduled 12-race card going to post at 12:05 pm (PT). Only six horses will be running for the $1,000,000 purse. This race is restricted to fillies and mares three years old and upward and will be run on the main dirt surface. The distance for the Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes will be 7 furlongs.
The weather for this day’s events looks as beautiful as ever. Typical running styles that win over this track in recent history are those who can just get to the lead. Of the contenders today, we will be highlighting three probable winners. In all reality, one horse should win, one horse should take second, and one should take third. This is a super straightforward race.
Betting Preview: (4) Ce Ce
Their recent race history suggests some nice Grade 2 victories make this horse a viable candidate, for second that is. Jockey Victor Espinoza is winning at 14% for the year. Trainer Mike McCarthy is winning at 16%. Their running style is that of a stalker. Workout times are fast.
Morning line odds are 4/1 but should be 6/1. Their history on this track is not great. Their history at the distance is ok with 2 wins in 4 tries. This horse could surprise, by taking second against the two heavier favorites.
Betting Preview: (5) Gamine
Their recent race history suggests this horse hasn’t lost since before last year’s Breeders’ Cup where they just happened to win this very same race. Jockey John Velasquez is winning at 17% for the year and will be riding for trainer Bob Baffert who is winning at 31%.
Their running style is that of a speedster. Workout times are good coming in. Morning line odds are 3 to 5 and will be even shorter come post time.
The only thing this horse doesn’t have going for her is a win over the track. Their history at the distance is a perfect four-for-four. Their history on this surface is 9 of 10.
Their experience, in general, is the best in the business. Even if this horse ran 90% they’d win. Teflon Bob will get this victory, and possibly a few more on the track he calls his home away from home.
Betting Preview: (6) Bella Sofia
Their recent race history suggests this is the only horse that can give Gamine trouble. Jockey Luis Saez is winning at 17% which is the same percentage as trainer Rudy Rodriguez. Their running style is that of a speedster or pacer. Workout times are just ok coming in. Morning line odds are 5/2 but should really be 4/1.
Their history on this track is nonexistent. Their history at the distance is a perfect one for one. The thing that Bella Sofia has going for her is she is a much more lightly raced horse who has only run 5 races in comparison to Gamine’s 10. Usually, more races are a good thing but fresh legs could win the day.
Spooky Express Free Pick: (5) Gamine would win if I rode her, and I’m a big guy.
