The $100,000 Dogwood Stakes presented by Woodford Reserve (G3) is set to run on June 6 at Churchill Downs. The race is for 3-year-olds and will cover seven furlongs.
The field of eight is set to include names like Four Graces and Edgeway.
Here is a look at the top runners in the Dogwood, which will award the top-four finishers points toward the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) on a 20-8-4-2 scale.
Four Graces and Edgeway
Whitham Thoroughbreds’ Four Graces took a first-level allowance three weeks back at Churchill Downs. The Dogwood will be her stakes debut.
Four Graces is a daughter of Majesticperfection. During her debut at Gulfstream Park in March, she was a 7-1 winner.
A half-sister of multiple graded stakes winner McCraken, she finished fourth in her second start at Gulfstream. She returned to take a 1 3/4-length victory on May 16 at Churchill Downs under Julien Leparoux.
Leproux will return as the rider as they break from post 2.
Four Graces’ biggest challenge will likely come from Hronis Racing’s Edgeway, who has won two of her three starts. She took a 1 1/2-length victory in a first-level allowance at Oaklawn Park.
Trained by John Sadler, she finished third in the April 4 Purple Martin Stakes at the Arkansas track. On April 26, she returned to take a six-furlong optional claiming race.
Edgeway will break from the outside post under jockey Tyler Baze.
Magic Dance and Bayerness
Another entrant is Three Chimneys Farm’s Magic Dance, winner of the 2019 Debutante Stakes at Churchill. She also finished third in the Adirondack Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course.
Magic Dance is trained by Steve Asmussen, and the More Than Ready filly is making her second start of the year. The half sister to grade 1 winner Guarana will break form post 5 under jockey Ricardo Santana Jr.
Bayerness will also make an appearance, attempting to bounce back after a seventh-place finish in the Feb. 29 Davona Dale Stakes (G2).
She won a one-mile test at Churchill Downs in November, which followed a debut victory at Keeneland.
Civetty, trained by Don Chatlos, will break from post 1 under jockey Martin Garcia. She has two career starts with one victory, which came in 2020, and her total earnings are $36,420.
Her single victory came in a Feb. 1 Maiden Special Weight race at Santa Anita.
The rest of the field (jockey, trainer) includes Ain’t No Elmers (Adam Beschizza, W. Bret Calhoun); Lady Glamour (Rafael Bejarano, Larry W. Demeritte); and Naughty Thoughts (Tyler Gaffalione, Jonathan Maldonado).
