The Grade III, $500,000 Franklin-Simpson Stakes will run as Race 9 on the Sept. 16 card at Kentucky Downs.

The event for 3-year-olds will cover 6 1/2 furlongs on turf and include names like Kimari and Turned Aside among the field of 16.

Here is a look at the top runners set for the Franklin-Simpson Stakes.

Kimari, Turned Aside

The morning-line favorite coming in at 5/2 is Ten Broeck Farm’s Kimari. The daughter of Munnings is trained by Wesley A. Ward.

She has a career record of 4-2-0 from seven starts and earnings of $421,177. In 2020, she has one win and one second from two outings.

The runner-up finish came last time out in the June 19 Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Ascot, and the victory was in the April 4 Purple Martin Stakes at Oaklawn Park, where she registered a 104 Speed Figure.

Kimari will break from post 7 under jockey Julio A. Garcia.

The second-choice coming in at 3/1 is Paul Pompa Jr’s Turned Aside. The son of Triple Crown Champion American Pharoah is trained by Linda Rice.

He is 3-2-1 from seven career starts and has earnings of $179,992. In 2020, he has one win and one second from two runs as well.

The colt’s most recent performance was the victory in the July 24 Quick Call Stakes (G3) at Saratoga, where he registered a 98 Speed Figure. That outing followed his runner-up effort in the June 19 Sir Cat Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont Park.

Turned Aside will break from post 1 under Jose Ortiz.
