The $300,000 Hollywood Gold Cup is set to have its 81st running on June 6 at Santa Anita.
The field for the 1 1/4-mile event is led by Midcourt, HIgher Power, Improbable, and Tenfold.
Here is a look at the field for the Hollywood Gold Cup.
Midcourt and Higher Power
Midcourt is trained by John Shirreffs and owned by C R K Stable.
The 5-year-old Midnight Lute gelding had his career-best performance two starts back, winning the Grade II San Pasqual Stakes on Feb. 1. He won that race by 3 1/2 lengths and earned a career-high 104 Beyer Speed Figure for the 1 1/8-mile event.
After sitting second throughout most of the race, he ended up being beaten by 3/4 length as the 3-5 favorite in the Big’Cap on March 7.
Midcourt will break from post 2 with regular rider Victor Espinoza, coming in at 2/1 odds.
Higher Power is trained by John Sadler and owned by Hronis Racing.
His last race was the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25, where he finished last as the 5-2 favorite.
The 5-year-old son of Medgalua d’Oro took his biggest victory four starts back in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Aug. 17. In that race, he sat in second early before pushing ahead to take a 5 1/4 length victory.
He also finished third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 2 and the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes Sept. 28. He has two third-place finishes from Santa Anita starts and is one for three at the distance of 1 1/4 miles.
Higher Power will be joined by regular rider Flavien Prat and break from post 3. He is sitting at 9/5 odds.
Improbable and Tenfold
The Bob Baffert-trained Improbable is owned by WinStar Farm and SF Racing.
The 4-year-old City Zip colt finished a close second in the ungraded Oaklawn Mile on April 11 after opening by two lengths on the wet fast surface. It was his first start since being beaten at 9-2 in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 2.
Improbable took the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity in December 2018, and he will be looking to take a second-shot at the 1 1/4 mile distance.
He will break from post 5 with jockey Drayden Van Dyke at 2/1 odds.
Tenfold is trained by Steve Asmussen and owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Last time out, he finished fourth in the Grade II, 1 1/8 mile New Orleans Classic on March 21.
The 5-year-old full horse by Curlin has not won since the Grade III Pimlico Special seven starts back on May 17, 2019.
Tenfold won the Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes in July, 2018 at Santa Anita, and he finished third, beaten by 3/4 length by Triple Crown winner Justify in the 2018 Preakness Stakes.
A millionaire, homebred Tenfold has four wins from 17 starts and will make his first-ever start at Santa Anita.
He will break from the outside post 6 under jockey Mike Smith at 6/1 odds.
The rest of the field includes Parsimony with jockey Mario Gutierrez and Brown Storm with Abel Cedillo.
