The Santa Anita Oaks Stakes from Santa Anita Betting Preview – Saturday, June 6, 2020

by Cole Paganelli | June 5, 2020 |

The Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Anita Oaks is set to run on June 6. The field of five sophomore fillies will go 1 1/16 miles.

The race will be the fifth on a 11-race card.

The field includes names like Swiss Skydiver, who will go for her third consecutive graded stakes victory.

Here is a look at the field for the Santa Anita Oaks.

Swiss Skydiver

Swiss Skydiver is trained by Ken McPeek and owned by Peter J. Callahan.

She went gate to wire to win the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks by 3 1/4 lengths two starts back on March 28.

In the Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn on May 1, she was set at 16-1 among the field of 14.

In that race, she stalked the early place and ended up winning by 2 1/2 lengths, earning a 99 Beyer Speed Figure.

Swiss Skydiver will come into the race with three wins from six starts.

She will break from post 1 under jockey Mike Smith, coming in at 6/5 odds.

Swiss Skydiver’s biggest competition will likely come in the form of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners’ Speech, trained by Michael McCarthy.

The filly was purchased for $190,000 out of the Ocala Breeders 2-year-old in Training Sale in March 2019.

She broke her maiden by nine lengths going six furlongs in her second start at Los Alamitos on Dec. 14. She then went on to finish second in a six furlong allowance on Feb. 1.

Following those efforts, she stretched out for the first time in her second-place finish in the Santa Ysabel on March 8. Speech earned her career-best 97 Beyer Speed figure after being beaten a neck by Gamine in a 1 1/16 mile allowance at Oaklawn.

Speech will break from post 3 under Flavien Prat, coming in at 8/5.

Others in the Field

The Bob Baffert-trained Merneith, owned by HRH Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud, will also run in the Santa Anita Oaks.

Purchased in March 2019 for $600,000, she was favored in all three of her starts.

On Feb. 23, she was defeated by a nose going a flat mile at the track. She came in at 4-5 going six furlongs on a sloppy track at Oaklawn on April 19.

Merneith will break from post 2 under Drayden Van Dyke at 2/1 odds.

The field will also include Smiling Shirlee, breaking from post 4 under Ruben Fuentes, and Regal Beauty, breaking from post 5 under Abel Cedillo at 10/1.
