Stogie’s Horse Racing Picks for Friday, May 16, 2025
Pimlico Race 8 Allaire Dupont Distaff Stakes
- 3 Candied has been facing much tougher Grade 1 competition and has run well versus Thorpedo Anna and Raging Sea. Filly was seen finishing third in the Grade 3 Doubledogdare Stakes at Keeneland. Gal is the logical choice as she makes her second start off the layoff and drops in class. Top Pick
- 7 Regaled has run very well to start her 2025 campaign. Filly was a 3-length winner in the slop two races back versus much softer. She followed that effort with a second by just a neck, once again in the slop, versus Stakes competition at Laurel. This daughter of Mohaymen has run two of her best races on an off-track which she likely will be the case today. Live Longshot
- 8 Sudden Switch is unbeaten in two career starts which includes a dominating near 5- 5-length win when facing winners for the first time. A move forward today in the speed figure department puts this gal in the mix. Don’t Ignore
Selections 3-7-8-1
Pimlico Race 10 Miss Preakness Stakes Grade 3
- 12 Vodka With a Twist has a definitive class edge versus her rivals here. Filly finished a disappointing third in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks last out. I’m going to forgive that effort as she was making her first start off the bench. She has been training exceptionally for her return with back-to-back bullets. Win Contender
- 6 Stunner looks like the controlling speed. She was unable to take them gate-to-wire in her last two Graded Stakes races, fading in late in the stretch to finish second. The field today is a much easier task for this daughter of Girvin. She enters here off a 1/38 bullet work. Win Contender
- 5 Family has run well in two starts on the All-Weather track at Turfway Park. Filly was game to wire, losing by just a head after setting a blistering early pace when taking on winners for the first time. If she can handle the surface switch today, she’ll be tough as nails in here. Major Threat
Selections 12-6-5-10
Pimlico Race 12 Pimlico Special Stakes Grade 3
- 1 Phileas Fogg has been a win machine who likes to wing it on the front end. The gelding has won 4 of his last 5 races which include 2 dominant victories in the slop. He has yet to face this stiff competition but he’s in good form and with the likely wet conditions, I just have to go with this Gustavo Rodriguez trainee. Win Contender
- 8 Star of Wonder is a lightly raced 4-year-old by Uncle Mo. Colt was able to win first off a layoff in his most recent start. He’s a 4-time winner in just 5 career starts. Flavien Prat who has multiple wins on this Colt, gets the call today. Win Contender
- 9 Red Route One is a closer who will need a fast early pace. He just might get that perfect setup. Don’t Ignore
Selections 1-8-9-7-3
Pimlico Race 13 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Grade 2
- 7 Reply has only two races to show her resume but I like what I see. This daughter of Curlin won on debut and then finished a solid second by just under a length in a local Stakes race at Laurel. She should relish the added distance today for the trainer Brittany Russell. Live Longshot
- 3 Margie’s Intention has been running well versus Louisiana Breds, finishing second in her two Stakes attempts in the bayou. This is a much tougher task as she faces open company today. However, this Filly ran a career top when breaking her Maiden in the slop. She likely gets a sloppy surface today. If the track is wet, I love this gal’s chances. Win Contender
- 4 Runnin N Gunnin ran into two very salty runners in Quitside and Simply Joking last out in the G3 Fantasy. Filly still managed to pick up a check with her third-place finish. She faces no such beasts in this Grade 2 today. Gal fits well here. Major Threat
Selections 7-3-4-5
