Cubs In Tough Division Battle
The Chicago Cubs are in 3rd place in the National League Central Division, one game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs are right smack dab in the middle of a heated race for the top that has changed countless times in the past week. With 4 of the 5 teams in the NL Central being within 1 game of the top spot, there has been constant change at the top. The Cubs have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games and will now get to earn some confidence with a series against the NL East’s top team, Atlanta Braves.
Jon Lester will make the start for the Cubs on Thursday Night. Lester has started 8 games this year and is 3-1 overall on the season. He has a respectable 2.66 ERA over 44 innings pitched. In that stretch of games, he has allowed 38 hits and 13 earned runs. Lester looked good in his last start, going 5.2 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 earned runs while securing the win for the Cubs against their crosstown rivals, Chicago White Sox.
Braves Enjoying First Place Position
When experts looked at the preseason predictions in the National League East, most would rank the Miami Marlins at the bottom of the division due to their offseason blowout of players and then rank the Atlanta Braves right above them in 4th place. With that being said, the experts don’t play the games and someone forgot to tell the Braves that they are suppose to be the stepping stones in the division.
The Braves are in first place in the National League East Division and have the second best record in the National League. They are one game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies and 1.5 games ahead of the Washington Nationals. The Braves have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games and have the best run differential in the National League with a +56. They have scored 221 runs and allowed 165 runs this year.
The Braves will give the Thursday start to Mike Soroka. Soroka has made 3 starts this year and is 1-1 on the season. Soroka has a 3.68 ERA over 14.2 innings. Soroka has been hit hard in those 14.2 innings, giving up 21 hits and allowing 6 earned runs.
Cubs Defeat Young Pitcher
It’s sort of hard to read Soroka’s numbers because the Braves are posting great run support for him. The truth be told, in his first game, he got the win but still allowed 6 hits in 6 innings. In the second game, he only lasted 4 innings and was tuned up at the rate of 7 hits and 4 earned runs. In his last outing, he only lasted 4.2 innings and gave up 8 hits in the short appearance. All three of those outings were against weaker offensive lineups of the Mets, Giants and Marlins. He will now face a potent lineup of the Chicago Cubs, which spells disaster for the young pitcher. I think the Cubs get to Soroka early and will be laying 3 units on the Cubbies to win the game.
Pick: Chicago Cubs -113 for 3 units
