MLB Betting Preview and Free Play: Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays – Friday, August 27, 2021

by Spooky Express | August 27, 2021 |

The best and worst teams in the American League East will begin a three-game weekend set at Camden Yards in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays come into the weekend, winners of four in a row, while the Orioles’ offense has come alive the last two games to the tune of 23 runs.

Tampa Bay Rays Betting Preview: Keep on Winning

The Tampa Bay Rays come into play with a record of 79-48, and they lead the American League East by four games over the New York Yankees and seven games over the Boston Red Sox. The Rays have won four in a row and eight of their last ten games. They are coming off a sweep over the Philadelphia Phillies after taking two of three from another likely playoff team in the Chicago White Sox.

The Rays will send lefthander Shane McClanahan to the mound to open things up with the Orioles. McClanahan has a record of 8-4 with a 3.63 ERA this season. In 94.1 innings, McClanahan has struck out 113 hitters, walked 31, and allowed 11 home runs. In his previous outing, McClanahan went five innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one in a 7-2 victory over the Orioles.

Offensively, the Rays are hitting .239, good for 10th in the American League. Their leading hitter is left fielder Randy Arozarena, who hits 272 with 16 home runs and 55 RBI. Designated hitter Austin Meadows has hit 21 home runs and has 88 RBI this season.

Baltimore Orioles Betting Preview: Keep Competing

The Baltimore Orioles come into play with a 40-86, good for fifth place in the American League East, 38.5 games behind the Rays in the division race. The Orioles have won two games in a row and scored 23 runs in those two games. They lost the first game in the series with the Angels but scored eight runs in that game.

The O’s are hitting, but their pitching has been suspect all season. They will send right-hander Matt Harvey to the mound Friday to open things up with the Rays. Harvey has a record of 6-13 with a 6.27 ERA. In 113.1 innings, Harvey has struck out 89 hitters, walked 34, and allowed 18 home runs. In his previous outing, Harvey went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one in a 5-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Offensively, the Orioles are hitting .240, good for ninth in the American League. Their leading hitter is center fielder Cedric Mullins, hitting .307 with 22 home runs and 45 RBI. Third baseman Ryan Mountcastle is hitting .264 with 23 home runs and 69 RBI.

On paper, this game is a total mismatch as the Rays have the best record in the American League, and the Orioles have the worst. However, if the O’s continue to hit as they have, you never know. The realization, however, is that the Rays are having to go all out with the Yankee's nipping at their heels, so they are going to win Friday and the rest of the weekend likely.
