MLB Betting Preview: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees – Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021

by Spooky Express | September 26, 2021 |

There is usually no more overhyped matchup than the Yankees (88-67) and Red Sox (88-67). But with the two teams tied for the top Wild Card spot with only seven games to play, it is definitely worthy of primetime baseball.

Both teams are looking to hold off the Toronto Blue Jays, who are sitting two games back at the start of the day. New York has pulled even with Boston by taking the first two games of the series.

The Yankees won yesterday's contest by a score of 5-3. Giancarlo Stanton hit a grand slam off of Dawinzon Hernandez in the eighth inning that proved to be the game-winning hit.

New York Yankees Betting Preview

The Yankees are getting hot at just the right time, winning five straight games. New York is coming off a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers and are going for a three-game sweep of their rival on Sunday Night Baseball.

The pitching staff has been the key to the winning streak. Yankees pitchers have held their opponents to three runs or less in all five games during the winning streak.

On the season, New York pitchers have been terrific, especially the bullpen. Yankees pitchers rank 4th in ERA and batting average against, 5th in WHIP, and 15th in quality starts.

New York hitters have been disappointing this season but have come alive of late. Yankees hitters rank 9th in on-base percentage, 18th in runs and slugging percentage, and 22nd in batting average.

Jordan Montgomery (6-6, 3.55 ERA) will take the mound looking to build on two straight great starts. Montgomery has thrown 11 ⅓ innings over his last two starts allowing only two runs while striking out 18.

Montgomery has thrown 149 ⅔ innings allowing 137 hits, 48 walks, and 56 earned runs. He has a WHIP of 1.24 and has struckout 155 on the season.

Yankees hitters have hit Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez well in the past. They have combined for an OPS of .860 in 216 plate appearances. Joey Gallo is 3 for 6 with two home runs off of Rodriguez.

Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

Boston pushed out to a two-game lead heading into the series with New York by putting together a seven-game winning streak. The Red Sox are now tied with the Yankees for home field in the Wild Card game after dropping the first two games of the series.

The Red Sox have been the opposite of the Yankees, with the offense carrying the load. Boston hitters rank 2nd in slugging percentage, 3rd in batting average, 4th in runs, and 5th in on-base percentage.

Boston pitching has really struggled this season. Red Sox pitchers rank 15th in ERA, 24th in WHIP, 26th in quality starts, and 28th in batting average against.

Rodriguez (11-8, 4.97 ERA) will look to avoid the sweep for Boston. Rodriguez only went 4 ⅓ innings in his last start against the Mets, allowing two earned runs on five hits and three walks.

On the season, Rodriguez has thrown 146 ⅔ innings allowing 161 hits, 43 walks, and 81 earned. He has a WHIP of 1.39 and has struckout 170.

Red Sox hitters have been pretty average against Montgomery. They have an OPS of .717 in 144 plate appearances. Christian Arroyo is 2 for 4 with two home runs off of Montgomery.

I thought this number would be Yankees -120. Line makers are overreacting to the law of averages thinking the Red Sox are due to win one game this series.

Montgomery has been throwing the ball much better than Rodriguez. I love the Yankees at -105 to finish the sweep and move ahead of the Red Sox in the chase for home-field advantage.
