The Chicago Cubs will take on the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday Night, June 17, 2018 in a Nationals League Central matchup in the MLB. This game is being played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri with the first pitch scheduled to take place at 8:08 PM. BetOnline has set the moneyline at Chicago Cubs -121 and St. Louis Cardinals +111, with the total for the over under play at 8.5 runs. This will be the third series this season that the Cubs and Cardinals will face each other. In the first series, back on April 17-19, the two teams both won a game and lost a game, with the middle game of the set being postponed due to inclimate weather.
In the most recent series, on May 4-6, the Cardinals broke out their brooms at home and swept the Cubies 3-0 by a combined score of 15-11.
Cubs Are NL Central’s 2nd Place Team
The Chicago Cubs are in second place in the National League Central Division, 1.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the division. They have gone 6-4 in their last ten games, including snapping their two game losing streak on Friday over the Cardinals. The Cubs ended their series earlier this week with the Milwaukee Brewers, failing to score a single run in the final two games of the series. They snapped that scoreless streak on Friday by breaking out their bats against the Cardinals, posting 13 runs on the board in the 13-5 win.
On Sunday Night, the Cubs will send Jose Quintana to the mound to make his 14th start of the season. Quintana is 6-4 on the season with a 4.09 ERA. He has given up 61 hits and 32 earned runs over 70.1 innings on the mound this year. In his last two starts, he didn’t factor into either decision in the games. He allowed a combined seven hits and four earned runs over 11.2 innings between the two games. He will be looking for his first win in the month of June, when he faces the Cardinals.
Cardinals Look To Close Ground On Cubs In NL Central
The St. Louis Cardinals are in third place in the National League Central Division. They are three and a half games back of the Chicago Cubs for the second place spot and five game back of the first place spot, currently held by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals have dropped six of their last ten games overall, including back to back games in their last series against the NL West last place San Diego Padres. They are anchored by the strong hitting of first basemen Jose Martinez, who is hitting .321 batting average, 10 home runs and 42 RBI’s. He leads the team in On Base % with .389 and a Slugging % of .517.
On Sunday, the Cardinals will give the ESPN start to Jack Flaherty. Flaherty is 3-2 overall on the season in eight starts this year. Flaherty has a 2.96 ERA over 45.2 innings in the 2018 season. Flaherty split his last two starts, beating the San Diego Padres but losing to the Miami Marlins. In the game with the Padres, Flaherty lasted 6.1 innings and struck out six batters, while allowing three hits and one earned run in the win over San Diego.
Cubs and Cardinals Play Low Scoring Game On ESPN
Both these teams have been up and down with scoring runs and in this game, I expect much of the same. Neither one of these pitchers are going to intimidate anyone but what they can do is pitch deep into the game and prevent their opposition from scoring runs. I look for this game to be a very low scoring game with the final score being somewhere around 3-2, 3-1 or possibly even lower. The best play here is to buy up the half point and roll with Chicago vs. St. Louis Under 9 for 2.5 units.
