The Indians and Twins meet in the third game of a three-game series. The Twins swept the doubleheader on Saturday, severely damaging the Indians hopes for a division title. Cleveland now sits five and a half games ahead with only 14 games to play. A win today would pretty much seal the deal.
The Indians were looking good with a three-run lead in the second game before Miguel Sano launched a grand slam leading to a five-run eighth inning that ultimately ended in a 9-5 win for the Twins.
The first game only needed a Jorge Polanco two-run homer as the Twins pitching shut down the Indians in a 2-0 victory. Five Minnesota pitchers combined on the shutout.
Minnesota Twins Betting Preview
With only 14 games to play the Twins can smell the finish line. The Indians made a hard surge in the middle of the summer, even overtaking Minnesota at one point, but Minnesota has built themselves a comfortable cushion at five and a half games. They are 91-57 and an impressive 50-24 on the road.
The Twins used bullpen games in both games of the double header. They will go for the sweep by sending right-hander Randy Dobnak (0-1, 2.25 ERA) to the mound for the series finale.
He will be replacing Jorge Berrios who was a late scratch. This will be his third appearance against Cleveland. He went four scoreless innings on August 9th, and allowed two runs in two innings last Sunday.
Minnesota has plenty of experience against Indians starter Shane Bieber. They have 135 plate appearances and a team OPS of .685.
Marwin Gonzalez, Jason Castro and Eddie Rosario all have OPS's above 1.000 and at least one homer off of Bieber. Gonzalez leads the way, he is six for nine with two doubles and a homer.
Cleveland Indians Betting Preview
The Indians were one of the hottest teams in baseball after a dismal April and May. But, if they are to finish this season off they will need a near perfect finish to the season.
Sitting five and a half games back with 14 to play it is almost an impossible mountain to climb. To have any chance they will need a victory today.
Cleveland right-hander Shane Bieber (14-7, 3.17), will start the finale looking to avoid the sweep. After an 0-3 stretch in four starts, he has answered with back-to-back victories. Bieber has won both decisions against Minnesota this season to improve to 3-0 with a 3.83 ERA in seven career appearance (six starts).
Cleveland has limited experience against Dobnak, with only 24 plate appearances. Yasiel Puig is 2 for 2 and Jason Kipnis has the only extra base hit against him, a double, and is 1 for 3.
This line is still down on almost every site. I anticipate it opening at around -160 for the Indians and the over/under around 9.

The Indians are desperate for a win, and the Twins used a lot of their top tier bullpen arms yesterday. I anticipate a lineup that is minus a few regulars for the Twins as they feel like they can buy an extra day off after yesterday's sweep. Jump on this line early and take the Indians as I think it will climb up as we get closer to first pitch.
