Matchup at a Glance
Where: Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California
When: Sunday, June 23, 2019 at 4:07 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Rays enter this game with a record of 44-33 and have lost four of their last five games including two of the three games in the series and are coming off a 2-4 loss in game three of the series on Saturday.
The Oakland Athletics enter this game with a record of 41-37 and have won four of their last five games including wins in game one and three in this series.
The Oakland Athletics have started to play with a lot more consistency and have won five of their last six games and will be going for the series win at home against the Rays on Sunday. Oakland is 41-37 overall, 24-18 at home and 12-16 as an underdog this season.
The Athletics will send Brett Anderson to the mound for game four of the series. Anderson is 7-4 on the season with a 3.68 ERA while striking out 45 over 85 2/3rd innings pitched. He is also 1-2 in his last three starts against the Rays while allowing an average of 2.67 runs and striking out an average of 4.33 in those games.
Matt Chapman leads the team in home runs with 17. Matt Chapman, Josh Phegley and Khris Davis are tied for the team lead in RBIs with 41 apiece. Marcus Semien leads the team in runs with 52.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays started the season off strong and looked like they may be the class of the AL East this season, but they have had an awful month going 9-13 and now trail the Yankees by 5.5 games in the division. Tampa Bay is 44-33 overall, 24-15 on the road and 36-26 as a favorite this season.
The Rays will send Ryne Stanek to the mound for game four of the series. Stanek is 0-1 with a 2.53 ERA while striking out 44 over 42 2/3rd innings pitched.
Brandon Low leads the team in home runs and runs with 15 home runs and 38 runs. Austin Meadows leads the team in RBIs with 38.
Tampa Bay Wins the Series Finale
Both of these teams could end up being in the playoffs in the AL but both are more likely to make the playoffs as the two wild cards than as division winners as there are better teams in the division. Oakland is 6-4 in their last ten matchups against Tampa Bay while outscoring the Rays by an average of 4.20 to 3.80 in those games.
The Athletics have also won two of the last three meetings against the Rays while outscoring Tampa Bay by an average of 4.00 to 3.67 in those contests. Despite the trends I still look for the Rays to come away with the win in game four of the series on Sunday against the Athletics on the road.
