The Padres have improved from last season, but still remain below .500 and a tier below the contenders. The way they are playing has them targeting a 2019 playoff birth.
The Cardinals have played well of late and are now eight games over .500. They are listed as -195 favorites in most sportsbooks tonight.
San Diego Padres (31-37)
The Padres -49-run differential has gone against them all year as they have struggled to find pitchers to limit opposing hitters. On the other hand, rookie Christian Villanueva has been a one-man show with the deep ball, launching 15 home runs, while driving in 35 runs. His ability to produce runs has been very important to a team lacking consistent contributors.
The Padres will send rookie pitcher Eric Lauer to the mound for his tenth start of the 2018 season. He has struggled mightily, failing to make it out of the fourth inning on three occasions. He has allowed five or more runs on four occasions and has accumulated a 6.64 ERA. He is 2-4. He allowed three runs on six hits over five innings against the Marlins his last time out, while striking out six and walking seven. He has his work cut out for him.
St. Louis Cardinals (36-28)
The Cardinals have not been at all impressive in 2018, but their pitching staff has been on another level. They have three starters with an ERA better than 2.60, and have a team ERA of 3.54. Bud Norris, who has spent most of his career as a starter, has done a nice job in the role of closer in St. Louis. They don’t have any extremely dynamic hitters, but a number of solid players. Their offense of late though, has been very impressive as guys are starting to come through with timely hits.
They will send third-year starter Luke Weaver to the mound for his fourteenth start of the year. He has posted a 3-5 record, accompanied by a 4.35 ERA and 60 strikeouts. He allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings with five walks and three strikeouts in his last outing against the Reds.
Weaver pitches a rare gem, Cardinals win
The Cardinals, listed as -195 favorites, will be emerging as the victors in this game. They have Luke Weaver to thank for this.
The struggling pitcher is going to allow just one run on two hits over eight strong innings of work. This is going to be a low-scoring game, something the Padres aren’t too used to, and it will favor St. Louis.
A win by a score of 3-2 sounds about right for a team that has been red hot of late and is looking to continue moving up in the NL Central.
