Spooky Express Betting Guide: Betting on MLB Baseball

by Cole Paganelli | March 18, 2020 |

In terms of the betting guide for MLB it is important that you know bankroll management, the MLB bets offered and handicapping. When you know these things you can increase your chances of winning when betting on America’s pastime.

Money Management

No matter what you are betting on money management is key and this is the case for betting on MLB as well. If you have a bankroll for the MLB season you know that the season is a long one lasting 162 games and then the playoffs. If you are in it for the long haul of the season make sure you are smart in your bankroll. You can bet many games or a few but stick to your bankroll for the season and do not go over it.

With the long season there will be highs and lows with your betting, so if you go through a bad stretch don’t chase losses by betting more in the next game or games. If you stick to your bankroll it can help you be successful when betting on MLB.

Know the Bets

You have to know the types of bets available for MLB and there are many of them. However, it is vital to understand the most popular ones of the moneyline, total, and run line.

Moneyline – There is no point spread in MLB and the moneyline evens the playing ground. Here is an example of a moneyline:

Boston Red Sox +120 vs. New York Yankees -150

In this game the Yankees are the favorite denoted by the – in front of the number and the Red Sox are the underdog with the +. In using $100 as an example you will have to wager $100 to win $120 betting on the Red Sox and wager $150 to win $100 betting on the Yankees. You can see that the payout is not as good for the Yankees but that is because they are the favorites in the game.

The totals bet is simple to understand as a sportsbook will set the line for the total number of runs scored in the game and you bet if you think the total will go over or under that amount.

A run line is a little bit of a point spread meaning the favorite will be giving runs while the underdog will get them. Here is an example of a run line bet.

Boston Red Sox -110 +1.5 runs vs. New York Yankees +130 -1.5 runs.

In the above example, you can see the moneyline odds have changed and with the Red So now the slight favorite. That is because they are getting 1.5 runs while the Yankees are giving 1.5 runs. So, for the run line bet to be a winner if you bet the Red Sox they have to win the game or lose by less than 2 runs and the Yankees have to win by at least 2 runs.

There are other popular MLB bets to make as well such as futures, proposition bets, and parlays but the three ones explained above are, by far, the most popular bets to make.

Handicapping

For any sports bet handicapping is key. You handicap a game by looking at various things in the game such as a team’s form, who is the starting pitcher, how they play home and away, head-to-head matchups, and how their key hitters are doing.

These are just a few of the tools you can check out when you handicap an MLB game. The more you know the matchup in a game the more likely it is you will make a smart bet, which is one that gives you a better chance to win.
