Bellator 179 is live Friday night from London, England with a kickoff time of 3:00 PM ET. The card is headlined with a blockbuster main event between Paul Daley and former UFC Welterweight Rory MacDonald. The Co-Main Event is another blockbuster fight between former Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Liam McGeary taking on Linton Vassell. Without any further hesitation, let’s jump right in and find some winners for Bellator 179.
Paul Daley vs. Rory MacDonald
The first fight we are going to handicap is the main event between Paul Daley and Rory MacDonald. This fight is scheduled for 3 five minute rounds in the Bellator Welterweight Division.
Paul Daley is coming into this fight off a devastating first round KO of Brennan Ward that brought his record up to 39-14-2 overall. Daley lost the fight prior to Douglas Lima by unanimous decision.
Rory MacDonald will be making his long awaited Bellator debut. MacDonald left the UFC after notching back to back losses to Stephen Thompson and Robbie Lawler. Both of those fights were scheduled for 5 rounds and both went 5 rounds, Thompson winning by 5 round unanimous decision and Lawler winning by 5th round KO. Rory has notable wins over Demian Maia, Robbie Lawler, Tarec Saffiedine and Nate Diaz.
Rory MacDonald hasn’t fought since June 2016. It will remain to be seen if it will affect him but one must believe that being out of the cage for nearly a year, will play a role in this fight if it goes beyond the 3rd round. That being said, I don’t think this fight gets out of the second round. I see it playing out one of two ways. Either Daley is going to come out fast looking to end this fight fast and get caught or this fight will go deep into the 3rd round, where Daley will gas, as he always does, and Rory will turn it on late to KO him. Either way, I see Rory leaving England with his hand raised!

Liam McGeary vs. Linton Vassell
The next fight I’m looking at is former Bellator Light Heavyweight Champ Liam McGeary against Linton Vassell. This fight is the co-main event and is scheduled for 3 five minute rounds.
Liam McGeary comes into this fight off a 2nd round KO of Brett McDermott at Bellator 173. For that fight, McGeary went through 2 other opponents before finally getting to fight McDermott. Liam was originally scheduled to fight Chris Fields but Fields was injured. He was then scheduled to fight Vladimir Filipovic but he too was injured and forced to withdraw. McDermott took the fight on less than a week notice and ended up getting KO’s as a huge underdog. McGeary is now 12-1 overall and will be fighting in front of his hometown of England for the first time ever!
Linton Vassell comes into this fight off back to back unanimous decision victories against Francis Carmont and Emanuel Newton. Prior to his two wins, he was on a streak where he went lost 2 out of 3 fights. He beat Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou but lost to Emanuel Newton and Muhammed Lawal.
This fight seems simple to me. Linton Vassell is a product of the Blackzilians and if you have followed the media about the Blackzilians lately, you know that the gym closed and it left fighters scurrying around for new places to train. What does that mean for Vassell, who I don’t think would of beat McGeary even when he was training full time with the Blackzilians. McGeary is simply too well-rounded for Vassell and I look for a finish early in the 2nd round.
Pick: Liam McGeary -185 for 2 Units
