UFC 269 was a massive hit! I know that the UFC didn’t get what they wanted with an Amanda Nunes win and subsequent staredown with Amanda Nunes and Kayla Harrison as the Judoka was Octagon side for the fight.
That was what was supposed to happen but the Venezuelan Vixen Juliana Pena had other ideas. The Spokane native brought the pressure and somehow, Amanda managed to panic and fade to nothing in just a couple of minutes.
I am not sure what went wrong with The Lioness but we have a new Women’s Bantamweight World Champion of the UFC and I expect a rematch to be on the horizon very soon.
In the main event, Charles Oliveira came through for us with a convincing win over Dustin The Diamond Poirier as the Brazilian began to implement his grappling game plan after an incredible back and forth first round.
The show must go on, though, and we have our final show of 2021 this Saturday night from the company’s Apex facility in Vegas. We will be back in the small Octagon and that is particularly notable for the fight I wanted to talk about with you guys today.
Stephen Wonderboy Thompson loves his space more than any other UFC fighter I would say and he is going to be without some of this Saturday night against pressure grappler Belal Remember the Name Muhammad.
The Chicago native loves to walk his opponents down, stay in their faces, make them tired, and eventually grind them out on the mat. Easier said than done against Wonderboy, though.
Let’s look at the betting odds for this UFC Welterweight matchup and from there, we can make a bet on either a winner, a round total, or perhaps a method of victory prop.
Stephen Thompson (-225) vs Belal Muhammad (+185)
Stephen Thompson will soon be joining me at 39 years of age in February and the South Carolina native has a game based on speed and reaction time. And when I say based, I mean ROOTED!
The problem is that reaction time is one of the first things to go for an aging fighter after speed. Mid-thirties, speed goes and mid to late thirties is when your reaction time slows down. Just think Anderson Silva vs Chris Weidman.
38, 39…I don't think steroids are going to help this nor do I think that Wonderboy would put a needle in his butt.
At the end of the day, though, Stephen is a far superior striker to Belal and I believe he has the wrestling to keep this fight standing for 3 rounds.
Wonderboy had to worry about Gilbert Burns power on the feet and that froze him for just long enough for the Brazilian to get the takedown and secure the round in their last meeting.
Belal doesn’t have that touch. He is a volume guy and he has a path to victory but the fleet of foot will be the difference just like we saw with Dom Cruz against Pedro Munhoz.
Pick: Stephen Thompson -225
