Here we go! Opening Day in Major League Baseball is Thursday, and we are pumped for the start of the season. The first game at Spooky Express is the St. Louis Cardinals at the New York Mets. It's one of 16 games slated for Opening Day. The game is scheduled to start 1:10 local time for New York natives. The Cardinals and Mets are both looking to get back to the postseason after a couple years removed.
The St. Louis Cardinals finished the Spring Training schedule with a 17-13 record. That was the fifth best record in the Grapefruit League. The New York Mets had the worst record in Florida, as they won just 10 out of 28 games. The New York Mets are the favorites in this game over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets are -140 over the Cardinals on Thursday.
Mets Moving from Tebow Mania
Tim Tebow once again went through the spring with the New York Mets. Recently, he was placed on the AA roster with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Now, the team will turn it's attention to winning baseball games out of the National League East. Most are predicting the Mets either second or third in the division, with the Nationals leading the charge. The Mets are sending Noah Syndergaard to the mound. The right hander missed most of last season, and is 24-18 in his career.
Syndergaard is just 25 years old, and has great stuff. When he faced the Cardinals last year, he was tough. The Cardinals as a team are 9-41 against him with Marcell Ozuna picking up 3 hits. Jedd Gyorko has a hit, which was a homerun in 6 at bats. The Mets project to start Adrian Gonzalez and Todd Frazier, two new additions at the corner infield spots. The outfield remains the same with Cespedes, Conforto and Jay Bruce.
Cardinals Looking for Bounce Back
It's been back to back seasons with the Cardinals not reaching the postseason. The fans are getting restless in St. Louis. The Cardinals took bad news Sunday when they sent Adam Wainwright to the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. The Cardinals have several question marks heading into the season. One that is not a question mark is ace Carlos Martinez. The righthander holds a 46-32 career record, after going 12-11 last season.
The Cardinals added Marcel Ozuna to the mix over the offseason. He will join the outfield for the Cardinals with Tommy Pham and Dexter Fowler. Pham is coming off a monster break out season. The infield will remain much of the same with Yadier Molina behind the plate. Matt Carpenter will get the lions share of play at first base with Kolten Wong, Paul DeJong and Jedd Gyorko manning the rest of the in field.
Cardinals Top Mets
The St. Louis Cardinals have some bullpen questions, but they have more of a solid group than the New York Mets. Mike Matheny has Tyle Lyons, Matt Bowman, Brett Cecil, Bud Norris and Dominic Leone out there for now. The Cardinals will use their bullpen early and often, especially early. Look for a good outing from Martinez, and a strong performance from the bullpen as the Cardinals beat the Mets.
The Mets are going to be a team that hangs around in the divisional standings, but just cannot get over the hump. The Mets lose on opening day, and look to bounce back Saturday afternoon. Take the St. Louis Cardinals +125 over the New York Mets on Thursday,
