Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

July 21, 2024

This week's Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN will feature the Boston Red Sox traveling to Los Angeles, California, to face the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The first pitch of Game 3 is scheduled for 7:10 PM ET.

Boston Red Sox Team Preview

The Boston Red Sox are in danger of being swept in a series for the third time this season after losing the first two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, including Saturday's 6-7 loss in Game 2 in extra innings. The loss on Saturday dropped the Red Sox's record to 53-43, which puts them in third place in the AL East, behind the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, and 6.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the division.

Brayan Bello recorded his 2nd straight quality start after pitching six innings, allowing three runs, and recording seven strikeouts. Tyler O'Neill had a monster game in the loss against the Dodgers as he had two home runs, four RBIs, and scored two runs, with both home runs being two-run home runs, with the first coming in the 7th inning, which also scored Jarren Duran and the 2nd coming in the 10th inning which scored Jarren Duran again.

Boston has lost three straight games against Los Angeles and has lost by an average margin of 2.33 runs per game in those contests. The Boston Red Sox will look to end their three-game losing streak in the series and avoid the series sweep when they travel to face the Los Angeles Dodgers for Game 3.

Los Angeles Dodgers Team Preview

Despite being in first place in the NL West and having the second-best record in the National League at 58-41, the Los Angeles Dodgers have not lived up to their high expectations entering the 2024 MLB season. They are on pace to win 95 games, which is 8.5 games short of their win total of 103.5 games.

The Dodgers have lost six of their last ten games. However, they are on a two-game winning streak following Saturday's 7-6 win in extra innings in Game 2 of the series against the Boston Red Sox. Gavin Lux and Enrique Hernandez hit home runs in the win, with Lux's being a solo shot in the 2nd inning. Hernandez's coming in the 9th inning, which was also a solo and tied the game 4-4, while Hernandez also scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning off a single hit from Will Smith.

The Dodgers have won three straight; however, Los Angeles has lost six of the last ten games in the series against Boston, and it has outscored the Red Sox by an average of 5.6 to 5.1 runs per game in those matchups.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will look to complete the series sweep and extend their winning streak to four games when they host the Boston Red Sox for Game 3 on Sunday night.

Odds and Series Trends

JustBet has the Los Angeles Dodgers listed as -115 moneyline favorites at home against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night for Game 3 of the series. Boston has won six of the last ten. However, Los Angeles has outscored the Red Sox by an average margin of .5 runs per game in those matchups and has won three straight games in the series by an average margin of 2.33 runs per game.

Game Pick

Both teams are above .500, with Boston having a record of 53-43 while Los Angeles has a record of 57-41. The Dodgers have dominated the series over the last three games, winning three straight games with an average margin of 2.33 runs per game.

However, James Paxton is 0-2 with a no-decision in his previous three starts against Boston while allowing an average of 5.33 runs and recording an average of 2.67 strikeouts per game in those matchups, which is why I am taking the moneyline for the Boston Red Sox when they travel to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night.
