Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros

May 12, 2024

The Houston Astros will travel to Detroit, Michigan, to face the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. The game will start at 1:40 PM ET on Sunday afternoon and will air on the MLB Network, Bally Sports Detroit, and Space City Home Network.

Houston Astros Team Preview

The Houston Astros have struggled this season and are looking to avoid their third series loss in a row after losing Game 2 of the series against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday by a score of 2-8, which also ended their two-game winning streak. Cristian Javier only lasted one and a ? innings and suffered his first loss of the season. He was pulled after allowing seven runs in the second inning against the Tigers.

Pitching has been a problem for the Astros over their seven games, as they have allowed an average of six runs per game during that stretch. The loss in Game 2 of the series also ended the Astros' three-game winning streak against the Tigers, as they entered Game 2 winning by an average margin of 7.67 runs per game during their winning streak.

Justin Verlander will take the mound for the Houston Astros, facing his former team. He will be looking to bounce back following a disappointing start against the New York Yankees, in which he suffered his first loss of the season and allowed seven runs over five innings pitched.

The Houston Astros will travel to face the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of the series, looking to avoid their third consecutive loss.

Detroit Tigers Team Preview

The Detroit Tigers are above .500 for the first time this month following the 8-2 win in Game 2 of the series on Saturday. However, the Tigers are in 4th place in the AL Central at 20-19. Detroit has struggled over its previous eight games and has compiled a record of 2-6 in May.

Despite only winning two games, the Tigers have outscored their opponents by an average of 4.5 to 4.25 runs per game in those matchups. Kerry Carpenter played a pivotal role in the Tigers' win in Game 2 of the series against the Astros, going two for five at the plate with two home runs and three RBIs.

The Detroit Tigers will look to win their first series since their series win against the St. Louis Cardinals when they host the Houston Astros for a Game 3 series on Saturday afternoon.

Odds and Series Trends

BetNow has the Houston Astros listed as -115 moneyline favorites on the road against the Detroit Tigers for Game 3 of the series on Sunday afternoon. Houston has won six of the last ten and two of the previous three games in the series while having won by an average margin of two runs per game over the last ten and 3.33 runs per game over the previous three games. Justin Verlander is 1-2 in his last three starts against his former team. However, he has only allowed a total of four runs and has recorded 23 strikeouts in those starts, while Jack Flaherty is 0-1 with a no-decision in his two career starts against the Astros and has allowed a total of five runs and has struck out 17 in those starts.

Game Pick

After losing their previous two series, both teams will be looking for their first series win this month. Houston will have Justin Verlander on the mound. However, Verlander is 1-2 in his last three starts against the Tigers but is only allowing an average of 1.33 runs per game in those meetings, while Jack Flaherty is 0-1 with a no-decision in his two starts against the Astros while only allowing an average of 2.5 runs per game. As a result, I am taking the under-8 runs for Game 3 of the series between the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers.
