An Early Look at the 2020-2021 NFL Super Bowl Favorites

by Ayden Fahlstrom | March 25, 2020 |

We all know how last season ended, so let’s look at what signings the 2020 contenders have made during free agency for this upcoming season.  Of course, the April draft is right around the corner and will be huge. I am sure with no sports going on at the moment we are all drooling for it to get started.

(+650) Kansas City………. Signed Chad Henne to back up Patrick Mahomes, they chose him over Matt Moore who was with the team last season.  It is nearly impossible to not make the defending champs the favorite. I have always been of the opinion unless there have been major injuries or drastic losses, they are the team to beat the following season.

(+800) Baltimore………..Baltimore resigned CB Jimmy Smith keeping the secondary together at least one more season.  Last season’s darlings are next in line and the big question is can Lamar Jackson repeat what he did last season?  Will defenses figure him out? The entire team returns and it hungrier than ever.

(+1100) San Francisco………..Signed former Arizona Cardinal LB Joe Walker to a one-year contract.  The Niners were pretty quiet during the offseason. I guess the 49ers are off the opinion if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it.  They were one quarter away from being the defending Super Bowl Champs.

(+1500) New Orleans……….Former Denver Bronco’s WR Emmanuel Sanders agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Saints.  Former Philadelphia S Malcolm Jenkins has agreed to a four-year contract with the Saints. He is coming home again after helping the Saints win their first Super Bowl in 2009.  It is huge Drew Brees returning for the Saints and they added another weapon for him in Sanders. I would love to see him get a ring after making the decision to come back this year, but father time has got to get his sometime don’t it?

(+1600) Tampa Bay………. The Bucs signed some QB from New England, I cannot remember his name off the top of my head, that’s right, its Tom Brady.  They also signed T Joe Haeg who spent the past four seasons with the Colts to help protect Brady. Of course, the rumors are out there that everybody wants to play for Brady & the Bucs now.  Obviously Jamie Winston will be seeking a new home this season. It was reported just yesterday that Ndamukong Suh is signing a one-year contract as well. Can one guy really make the Bucs jump up this much to a serious contender?  I personally don’t think so. I think Tom left the Patriots and did not retire for all the wrong reasons, but that is just my opinion. If I am wrong I will be the first to admit it. You know the entire football world’s eyes will be on the GOAT next season.

(+2500) New England……… Brian Hoyer was signed to compete for the starting QB position with Jarrett Stidham who is considered the favorite.  Cody Kessler is in the mix as well but don’t rule out them drafting a quarterback. K Stephen Gostkowski was released from the team. DB Nate Ebner signed with the Giants, LB Elandon Roberts, OL Ted Karras, LB Kyle Van Noy all signed with the Dolphins.  DB Duron Harmon & LB Jamie Collins signed with the Lions while DB Duron Harmon was traded to the Lions. TE Phillip Dorsett remains unsigned as of this writing. It appears the magical run is over, but that does not mean they still cannot win the AFC East and make the playoffs.  I am sure everybody is rooting for them to fall on their faces and until they do, you can never count them out.

(+2500) Philadelphia……….The Eagles wanted to add speed to their defense and they did that by adding former Steelers DT Javon Hargrove, former Charger LB Jatavis Brown & former Bronco’s S Will Parks to the team.  They also acquired CB Darius Slay from the Lions for some draft picks. They did lose RB Jordan Howard to the Dolphins. You can never count the Eagles out simply because they are in the NFC East and you never know who is going to win that division.  If Wentz gets hot at the right time he could carry during a playoff streak. Strangers things have happened. The Eagles always seem to have the talent but struggle to put it all together. One of these years they are going to.

(+2500) Pittsburgh……….The Steelers have been extremely quiet on the free agency front with no big names and just a few non-essential players, no disrespect intended.  Pittsburgh nearly made the postseason in a year where what could go wrong did go wrong in 2019. Big Ben claims he is healthy and in the best shape in years. The defense was solid and ranked 5th last season and is what kept them in games and in the race, so if Ben gets the offense going again, lookout.  If the Pats are truly out of the picture like many suspect, that just may open the door for another ring for the Steelers.

(+2500) Seattle……….Outside of signing a couple of offensive linemen, the Seahawks have been fairly idle during the free agency period.   Let’s face it, Seattle is just one of those teams that as coach Pete Carroll & QB Russell Wilson are leading the way, there is a chance they could go the Super Bowl and win it.  It is just years their chances are better than others.

My Pick:  San Francisco

I love taking the team that lost the previous season Superbowl as long as they have pretty much the same team coming back.  It is too easy taking the defending champs and it is never easy to repeat. What could be more motivating than knowing you should have won that game and going home with nothing.  Sure they went home depressed and probably sulked for a couple of months, but that had to turn into anger and then motivation. They will be back and this time they will win.
